The best bike!

I am super happy with my new bike and I love absolutely everything about it - the minimalistic design, the built in battery, the quality made. I ride to work and back that is more than 30 km and I still have 80 % of battery left. The rear light is fancy, but when using a bike basket or a saddle bag, it is not seen well, thus it would be a good idea to have an extra backlight.

I have been regularly using the Ampler Stout (M size) for a month. I ride to work every day (14 km in total) and take longer rides on weekends. In short, the Stout is absolutely the best commuting bike on the market in terms of functionality, style, and price. It could be improved in some parts (which is why I gave a four instead of five stars), but I would still buy it again as it is. And indeed, after one week I bought an Ampler Stellar for my wife.

Longer review if you are interested in details. Before buying the Stout, I looked around for alternatives as this was my first e-bike. I searched for e-bikes that look like classic bicycles, that are minimalist and robust, and with a reasonable weight and price. Ampler emerged as the clear winner on all fronts. Unfortunately, Ampler does not have a shop or service center in Switzerland, where I live, but they have a few “ambassadors” who let you try their e-bikes. I could not find an ambassador with a Stout M, but I did have the opportunity to try the Curt size M (10 speeds) and I immediately placed the order for a grey Stout size M, which is the smallest size in the Stout series. I received the Stout within the promised timeframe and I completed the easy assembly in less than 10 minutes with the tools provided in the box.

The bicycle rides smoothly, and it feels robust and yet surprisingly light. I ride most of the time without electric assistance, but on my way back home I must switch it on to climb up approx 200 meters over 3 km. Electric assistance (coupled to the excellent 10-gear Shimano shifter) is a game changer, but you still have to put good effort for inclines higher than 10%. This is perfectly fine with me. The brakes are responsive and strong. The gear shifter is smooth and I do use it a lot on my daily ride to cope with the inclines. The pedal assist feels natural and supportive. Starting from a standstill on a strong inclines (10% or more) takes almost a full pedalling cycle before I can feel the support, but that’s OK. Once you are moving, the rear motor’s assistance is immediate. The Ampler Stout changed my lifestyle: faster commute in traffic, no more parking worries, and healthy daily exercise at a level than one can decide.

There are two issues with the Stout, however. The first and most important issue is that the minimalist switch (assistance level and lights) is positioned near the pedals: it is therefore impossible to change assist level or switch on/off lights while you are pedalling. And even if you stop, it is not trivial to bend down in the middle of the traffic to fiddle around with the switch in order to press it for the appropriate duration and check if it blinked one, two, or three times. You can also change assistance level and light status from the app on your smartphone, but it is tricky to take the phone out of your pocket, pass through security code, touch finger or face recognition as you pedal in the traffic, find and switch on the app, and select the desired mode. Also, if you wear gloves, forget it. I did buy a smartphone support to keep my phone on the handle, but you must ensure that the phone screen stays on all the time and when it rains, the touch screen looses sensitivity and you cannot always select the assistance mode when you need it. It would be so much better if the switch was positioned on the tube between the saddle and the handle, or if Ampler could provide an optional bluetooth-connected switch that could be positioned on the handle. The second and more personal issue is that the Stout is a big bicycle: the smallest size is M and the smallest suggested height for Stout M is 175cm. I am 173cm: I can ride the bike, no problem, but I must get off the saddle to start on inclines. Confusingly, the Curt M size, which I had tried earlier, is smaller than the Stout M size, and indeed it was perfect for me. While Ampler offers the Curt and Stellar in S size, it does not do so for the Stout. Probably, the company looked at the height distribution of their potential customers and decided that the Stout would not sell well in S size. Whatever the case, if you are less than the minimum suggested height of 175cm, make sure that you try the bicycle before buying.

A final comment on the app. While some customers complained in the past that the app was not responsive or not very ergonomic, it always worked well for me. However, there is room for improvement. For example, iit would be good to be able to switch between speed and battery charge indicators by a simple tap instead of opening up a menu, selecting options, and clicking on a tiny confirmation text. Also, it would be great if the bicycle could include an odometer to count the total number of kilometres, independently of whether you use the app for a destination or recording a specific trip.

All in all, it is a great e-bike with solid construction, elegant and minimalist style, good assistance range, and good price. I strongly recommend it.

The red bicycle looks very good! It's quite lightweight and you can bicycle without sweating. However, the engine doesn‘t push the bicycle smoothly. The rear light should be in the back because I use a bike basket.

Bike is nice to ride. I’m disappointed that speed is limited to 25km/h. If I would buy bike again I wouldn’t buy Ampler.

Great BIKE

It’s been several months since i bought my Ampler Stout. I absolutly love my bike. It has enough support to do a daily commute to work of 34km. The bike has a excellent build quality. It’s the first time i own a bike with disc brakes. It makes a huge different! I love the fact that the battery is build in. I could really get the 70km on one charge.

I have to admit i had a annoying cracking sound coming from the bike after just two months of use. After sending an email to the support, i’ve got a response that my bike would be picked up. After only 10 days, i received my bike and the issue was solved. Afterward i also lost a small plastic part of the bike that holds the cable on the frame, they have send me some spare parts for free.

So i can easily say that the support is excellent! Only downside is the app. It has literally no extra value … but i’ve heard they working on a new version.

Excellent bike, with good quality parts and lights. Would recommend it to everyone.

Own Ampler Curt single speed since early 2019, did almost 11000 km since then and I am very happy with the choice I made.
The bike really looks great, worth hanging on the wall in the living room. The built quality is great too, all is well screwed together and after 10k km still a very solid bike.
In this time had to change only the brake pads and pedals due to my own fault. Also had an issue with the freehub, which had to be changed under the warranty and that gave the opportunity to experience exemplary customer service: communication was clear and prompt, the bike was shipped from London to Berlin and back in 3-4 weeks, which I think is very satisfactory.
Very light for the electric bike, very nimble, perfect for London. Great job Team Ampler!

Best bike ever

Such a great ride! Wish I could go faster.

Stout: Gratulation: ein wirklich ausgereiftes Rad, passt soweit alles: Sehr gut zusammengestellt, besonders die Reifen - angenehm auch über Kopfsteinpflaster. Schaltung, etc... top. Optisch gelungen sehr elegant. wirkt stabil - mehr weiß man nach 1000 km. jetzt zu den negativen Dingen: Firmen wie ampler sollten sich angewöhnen die Räder, die sie verschicken EINMAL VOR dem Versand komplett zusammenzubauen und einmal probefahren! Sehr ärgerlich: Ein Pedal war das Gewinde hin, mühsame Reklamation, warte jetzt schon seit 8 Tagen. Ungeschicktes Beschwerdemanagement... wenn auch bemüht. Ansonsten: alberner Klingel - für ein Stadtrad dezibelmäßig völlig untauglich. Rücklicht: Scheint modern zu sein die LEDS an der Sattelstütze zu integrieren. Aber es hat schon einen Grund dass seit vielen Jahrzehnten das Licht ganz hinten am Schutzblech ist, denn bei Gepäckmitnahme am Gepäckträger sieht man kein Licht mehr. und dann die Sache mit der APP - immer wieder Ausfälle und Verbindungsprobleme, aber geht dann doch immer wieder. Alles im allen Preis/Leistung bisher das beste Rad, das ich an Stadt E Bikes gefunden habe und das beste das ich ja hatte (mein 3.).

Absolutely beautiful bike. Exactly what I wanted and expected. My commute is so much more pleasant now.

Points for improvement:
1) Easier switch between power settings
2) Bungee cord snapped on week 2 - stronger version?
3) Still a bit heavy for me to carry upstairs

I really love my bike. I don’t like the App though. It still need some improvement. That is the reason it only get 4 stars.

I love my bike. I am always trying to find good reasons to use it. It is quite light thus I can even use it without assistance. I often use the first level of assistance during the weekend. During the week, the second level ensures I will not sweat.
The color is beautiful and the bike quality is very good. I feel confident on the bike even at high speed.
