This is a ludicrous knife. It sits somewhere between a machete and an axe, worse than either of those at their respective tasks, and yet inexplicably charming and fun to use. I have used it for cutting branches and chopping firewood logs into kindling, which it performs adequately at.

Yeah, it's basically a sharp metal bar. With a blade that's 7mm thick and nearly half a metre long overall, this is a serious piece of steel.
It's impractical. You could buy a machete for nearly a tenth of the price, or a decent-quality hatchet for a half to a quarter. I would say that the main reason to buy this is because you think it's cool :)

Like with the VT Bowie, the handle is rectangular in profile, not very shock absorbent, and not at all ergonomic. You will feel every strike. But this is an old-world knife made in a simplistic fashion and free from modern contrivances. It's an honest and brutal cleaver that will handle anything you throw at it, it's just a matter of if it breaks your hand apart in the process.

Compared with the VT Bowie, I think the sheath is more well-considered. Like with the VTB it is made of thick, full grain leather. However unlike the VTB the belt loop is riveted onto the back of the sheath rather than being one continuous looping piece. While a less substantial belt loop, I have no doubts in the sturdiness of the construction method, and with the added benefit that in this case the crossguard is able to sit completely flush against the opening of the sheath with no gap. The bottom of the sheath is also open, allowing any moisture inside to drain out the bottom.

As with the Von Tempsky Bowie, this is a seriously sturdy and well built blade that will endure the test of time, and there's no reason this couldn't end up in the hands of your great grandchildren if maintained properly. I rate it 5 stars as long as you understand that this is a functional novelty above all other things. There are more suitable tools for the jobs you might want this for. But as it stands I think it's a beautiful knife and I am really pleased to own it.

I have owned this for quite a few months now. I have used it for relatively light outdoors activities, such as carving stakes and chopping small trees. It handled all of that really well but I haven't put it through particularly hard trials yet.
It arrived nice and sharp, really well made. Probably the nicest knife I own and I think this could handle almost anything. It's incredibly thick and strong. Maybe needlessly thick, but I like it.

The caveats: It is heavy. If a lighter knife will do the task, then this knife is perhaps not the best choice. Repeated chopping may fatigue your hand, as it's not an axe. It lacks dexterity but common sense should indicate that a heavy 30cm blade won't be the most suitable for detailed work.
The profile of the handle is rectangular. This makes it quite fatiguing in the hand, but I understand that it's done on purpose due to historical precedents. Someone more daring might consider sanding the handle to a more ergonomic profile and that could make it much more comfortable.
The fit of the sheath could be better because the belt loop interferes with the crossguard, causing a gap of about 5mm and preventing the knife from sitting flush in the sheath. I fixed this by cutting off most of the belt loop and fashioning a new fastening strap from what remained. It means I don't have a belt loop anymore but I don't mind.

Besides those considerations, this is a nearly $400 knife. And it feels like one. Svörd is not skimping out on materials. There are no manufacturing defects. The finish of the knife I would describe as "utilitarian" but by no means cheap. You get the sense that this is a premium product and a near-invincible one at that.

The bottom line is that there are probably more comfortable modern answers to your problem that are cheaper, but this is a real beast of a knife that won't let you down, and I truly love it. Take care of it and it will outlive you.

I thought it was fiberglass not moulded plastic and the mounting screw holes are all offset at an angle so mounting is going to be a problem and it's heavy. Sorry Cuzes but she's rough

Having used Energiser key ring lights for many years as we have found them reliable, less likely to be turn on accidentally, and long life batteries. Not many retailer's stock them these days so it was time to stock up.
We have them on most sets of keys.
