For me the key point of having DSC was a one button solution to calling for assistance (in addition to a having a PLB). However, DSC is not monitored by emergency services in New Zealand so they will NOT get your GPS location and you will need to speak with them on channel 16 as you normally would do. Which if you in a rough sea and high wind might be hard (hence the point/intention of having DSC which if functioning transmits location, vessel name, MMSI number which then connects the information they hold on you to emergency services).
