The Shield of Psalmic Prayer: Reflections on Translating, Interpreting, and Praying the Psalter
I’m reading the book slowly with great appreciation for the author’s personal life of scholarship and beautiful simplicity. He is opening up new worlds of unfathomable awe in the Psalms

Renewing You: A Priest, a Psychologist, and a Plan
As a Christian husband and father, I am always looking for resources that help me to be more devoted to Christ, a better family man, and a blessing to others. Renewing You offers some practical steps toward these goals. It is encouraging and easy to read. Written by a husband and wife team (one a priest and the other a psychologist), this book offers counsel that comes from their years of experience in raising an Orthodox Christian family and helping others. They relate insights gained from their personal and professional lives, the Scriptures, the church fathers, and studies in the field of psychology.
Each chapter focuses on one key theme and ends with a prayer along with questions for personal reflection or discussion. The Louh’s show us some steps we can take to begin drawing close to God, effectively communicate with our spouses and children, avoid errors in our thought life that affect our relationships, face our trials, deal with temptation, and shine a little light in someone’s life.
I was truly blessed by this book. In each chapter there was something that made me stop reading and go right to prayer as I realized an opportunity for spiritual growth in my life. If you are looking for a book that can help you take your next steps toward a richer, fuller, more purposeful life in Christ, you must read Renewing You.

2021 Calendar of Liturgical Seasons, Patmos (Julian version, old calendar)
I’m really happy to have received my 2021 calendar. Normally, I don’t like to wish that time goes by faster, but this year I can hardly wait for the new year to begin! Like last year’s calendar, it is beautiful!

I Live Again: A Memoir of Ileana, Princess of Romania and Archduchess of Austria
I am loving this memoir and amazed at the incredible life of Princess Ileana. Her courage and faith were so inspiring. Plus it is an opportunity to learn about Romanian history and the depth of both suffering and perseverance of her people. How they loved their Princess!

All Is Well
Let’s face it, we have all been urged to read an Orthodox book by a priest or a well-meaning friend only to encounter a labyrinth of unfamiliar terms in stilted language. This is not what you will find in Dr. Rossi’s All is Well. The triumph of All is Well is in its remarkably clear language that reflects Dr. Rossi’s love of Jesus Christ. This book was written as “a path to healing.”
Our being made whole begins with Dr. Rossi’s audacious claim, “All is well.” This affirmation enters into a world aflame with political, racial and economic division. In spite of all this strife, Dr. Rossi beckons us “to say that all in my life is sufficient.” This conviction is the beginning point from which Dr. Rossi guides us along a path where we encounter important topics such as facing ambiguity, living a life of purity and where is heaven, to name of few. With every step along the way, we are nurtured by Dr. Rossi’s loving encouragement.
I can’t recommend this book enough to those looking to engage the complex problems of our day in a loving and peaceful manner.

The Shield of Psalmic Prayer: Reflections on Translating, Interpreting, and Praying the Psalter
I just got started on this book and it is not for the average reader. A lot of work has gone into this publication and the author (Sheehan) had been very thorough in his poetic interpretations of some of the psalms; however, I found it difficult to read into his mind. The author does show a deep commitment to being an Orthodox Christian but he is also (in my mind) dealing with his depression.

Renewing You: A Priest, a Psychologist, and a Plan
This book is a cross between a relaxed self-help book and a hefty reference tome--easy to consume but essential to refer back to. The personal stories and insights are fun and helpful. Every chapter is closed with a prayer on that chapter's topic, as well as ten discussion questions that work great for individual reflection and are GOLD as book club discussion guides. I could see church groups huddled around tackling the particularly tough and rich sections (like the one on forgiveness). I know way too many supermoms who need to sit down and bury their heads in the "Tend to Yourself" chapter, so they can keep doing the incredible work of managing their families. For me, the chapter "Share Your Light" is particularly convicting. I highly recommend you pick up a copy, and, if possible, get discussions started with a group of friends - there's a lot to talk about and talk through here.

Gratitude in Life's Trenches: How to Experience the Good Life. . . Even When Everything Is Going Wrong
I went through the book rather quickly on my first read. Now I am reading more slowing to think about and better absorb the contents. I believe given time the principles given in this book will help me to overcome or at least lessen my lifelong tendency towards depression, anxiety and negative thought patterns and lead me towards a life of gratitude and contentment and faith.

Toolkit for Spiritual Growth: A Practical Guide to Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving
This book is aimed toward new converts or anyone interested in learning more about the Orthodox faith. It is a basic overview of the three main tenants of Orthodoxy. Father Evan's writing is conversational, easy to understand, and down-to-earth. He has helped so many converts, including myself and my entire family, transition and grow in our faith. His patience and excellent teaching style are conveyed in his writing, as well as his passion to make Orthodoxy accessible to all.
The last paragraph sums the book up well, "I do hope you find what is written in these pages to be useful in your spiritual growth and that your path is either already connected to the Church or will be soon. What we do matters. Our physical actions, our giving of alms, and the way we treat our bodies affect not just our own lives, but the lives of those around us. Our physical reality is important because it is deeply connected to the spiritual."
I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about Orthodoxy, or anyone who is already Orthodox and desires to grow in their faith.

Icon: A Novel
I went on a monastery retreat a couple of years ago and one of the nuns read us a portion of this book. We were all intrigued right away and the monastery bookstore was sold out almost immediately after. I was lucky enough to be able to get the book and it is now one of my favorites. I picked it up again this Lent and am hoping to make it a tradition to read every Lent. I think it is a really important book for all young Orthodox Christians to read!

Fertile Ground: A Pilgrimage through Pregnancy
Wow. I recently started listening to the audiobook of Fertile Ground a couple months ago, and it has been AMAZING!! When I heard about it when it first came out, I was skeptical of how impactful and needful yet another pregnancy book would be. But now, having gotten through week 32, I can definitely say that I think *every woman who is pregnant, or is a mom, or is considering becoming pregnant* should read this book!!! It has opened my eyes to SO many different aspects of pregnancy, childbearing/rearing, and motherhood that I had never considered, and continually points things back to Christ, Prayer, His Mother, and the Church. It is refreshing and inspiring. Each week focuses on a different topic, such as weakness, strength, light, water, pain, prayer, village, and each week had me attentively listening, and wanting more the author writes with wit and is quite engaging, and she's entertaining to listen to. I have the audiobook, but I'm definitely going to buy a physical copy, because I know this is a book I will come back to again and again! (Also this would make a fantastic gift!)

Toolkit for Spiritual Growth: A Practical Guide to Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving
I thoroughly enjoyed Father Evan's Toolkit for Spiritual Growth. It is a quick read, but full of spiritual advice that one can use on a daily basis. It is a gem of a book that everyone should have in their library, and one that will be reread often. Highly recommend this book.
