Tending the Garden of Our Hearts: Daily Lenten Meditations for Families
This was a wonderful resource for my family this Lent! I have 3 children, ages 5, 8, and 10, and they all listened intently and learned a lot. My husband and I did, too! It was a great platform for many meaningful family discussions, and the perfect tool to keep us focused on the Lenten journey.

At the Corner of East and Now: A Modern Life in Ancient Christian Orthodoxy
I became a fan of Frederica Mathewes-Green's writing early in my exploration of Orthodox Christianity, reading “Facing East,” a beautiful narrative of a liturgical year as celebrated in the small, convert-heavy Eastern Orthodox Church where her husband served as parish priest. “At the Corner of East and Now: A Modern Life in Ancient Christian Orthodox,” is something of a sequel to that earlier work – and yet, it stands well on its own with its poignant, personal, cultural and theological principles, wit, and perspective.
I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by the warm, soothing and unassumingly articulate voice of the author. Thus, this "reading by ear," as it were, opened a new and beautiful layer of experiencing the work of a gifted, brilliant writer and mind . . . and soul.
Though she has her accounts of treasured saints of the Church from centuries passed, perhaps the genius of Mathewes-Green rides on the loving snapshots she shares of her family, parishioners, and strangers she has met on the journey of faith. Those slices of spiritual life -- often spiced with touching, humorous detours -- shows us truly how Orthodoxy, particularly the evolving American expression of the Ancient Faith, is borne on the shoulders of our flawed, earthly saints in the making.
My only complaint? It ended too soon! I was listening to what was the final chapter and smiling as its heart-warming, loving insights into a particularly unique character (read or listen to learn more on that; no spoilers from me!), when I realized it was done.
I even stopped my outdoors hike to check, convinced my audiobook app had crashed. Alas, it had not.
And that is why I look forward eagerly to Mathewes-Green's next work.

Practical psalter
The Ancient Faith Psalter
Exactly what I was looking for: a good quality psalter for daily use. The translation is accessible to all.
Prior to buying, I read some negative reviews about paper quality, etc etc and that it's Masoretic corrected to the Septuagint. While I'm sure those individuals are a blast at social gatherings (no) this psalter is a great tool and I've already appreciated the Psalms more through this work. Thank you!

Absolutely love it. What a joy. I can light it easily. It doesn’t take up much room. I put a little sand in it and then a tea light on top of the sand

kI wish I'd had this during my conversion
Know the Faith: A Handbook for Orthodox Christians and Inquirers
This is the book I wish I'd had during my conversion to Orthodoxy. Rev. Michael Shanbour does a beautiful job of dissecting the differences in doctrine between the ancient Orthodox church and the more 'modern' Protestant faith.
The book outlines the doctrinal differences between Protestantism and Orthodoxy on these essential issues:
'The Church
'Grace
'Salvation
'Justification by Faith
'Tradition & Scripture
'The Eucharist & Liturgical Worship
'Ordination & the Priesthood
'Confession & Repentance
'Icons, Veneration & Worship
'The Intercession of the Saints
'Veneration of the Virgin Mary
Father Michael explores these issues with such clarity that I have a new understanding of some of these topics'for example, I now not only feel like I completely understand the doctrine of Grace as held by the Orthodox Church, but for the first time in my life I really understand the Protestant doctrine as well. These distinctions are so vital for inquirers and this book is a gift.
As a former Protestant I've found it exceedingly difficult to talk about my Orthodox faith to my Protestant friends and family without causing conflict and hurt feelings, but Father Michael goes about this delicate task in such a diplomatic 'but forthright'way that I have changed the way I think about such conversations.

Blueprints for the Little Church: Creating an Orthodox Home
(This audiobook was given to me in exchange for an honest review.)
As many of us retreat to our homes and face the daunting task of journeying through Great Lent and Holy Week, only to celebrate the Feast or Feasts and the Paschal season in our own icon corners, the book Blueprints for the Little Church: Creating an Orthodox Home, by Elissa Bjeletich and Caleb Shoemaker is especially timely. Not only is it available in print, but you can also download the audiobook instantly from Audible. For those familiar with another of Elissa's projects, the podcast Tending the Garden of Our Hearts, her voice will be a welcome guide. This time she coaches parents through the process of building up a prayer life and a home that reflects their love of God, which will enable them to raise children that will number among His saints.
Though converts would find this book particularly informative, it is valuable for cradle Orthodox Christians as well. Those who grew up in a single jurisdiction may delight in learning about others. For instance, I enjoyed hearing the details of Slavas, the Serbian tradition of honoring a family saint and offering hospitality on that feast day. Similarly, the activities suggested for each feast are especially welcome for those of us enduring stay at home orders. Many of the suggestions are new ideas that only require items found in the home, and would make the feasts come alive for children and teens.
Consider spending a few hours listening to Blueprints. It is sure to strengthen and encourage you as you prepare to greet the unique challenge of celebrating Pascha apart from your church family.

The Ancient Faith Psalter
Beautifully printed and presented, and the modifications in the translation are not troublesome, but often helpful. Organizing by day and time is also of great assistance. Whatever helps us approach God more sincerely and discerningly is a blessing. This Psalter does that for me.
