The Cross and the Stag: The Incredible Adventures of St. Eustathius
This book is not only for children. Graphic novels are also a great reading medium for adults as well. I purchased this book for a family member who likes comics, Japanese anime and manga style books. Graphic novels are also a great reading medium for adults as well. People have different learning and reading styles, and the graphics with a story reach those who are visual learners. And, can also bridge over to a younger generation as an introduction to the faith. I highly encourage this author to write more books.

Shepherding Sam (Sam and Saucer, Book 1)
I purchased it as a gift for my Godson. I read the book first and thoroughly enjoyed the story and especially the lesson that ended the story. I'm a Sunday School teacher and will keep the lesson in back of my mind for a potential Sunday School discussion.

The Good Samaritan: A Children's Catechism
I have given one of these to each of our families with children so that they can use them themselves with their own children. We are delighted with content and would recommend for any parent or church teacher.

Friends of Christ - February
Our favorite story from this volume was of St. Photini.
After reading, we listened again to “Tending the Garden of our Hearts” podcast on St. Photini and then discussed all the new information that we now knew of the saint (with some fact checking using the gospel insisted upon by my child). What a wonderful resource these volumes are for children and families!

The Holy Angels
This book is a wonderful overview of Angels as seen through the history of the church. Beginning with an overview of how angels are portrayed through the Hebrew Scriptures, the author seamlessly moves to the Gospels, the Epistles, and then to the writings of the Church Fathers. She even touches on how angels were used (and misused) in the Gnostic Gospels. She concludes with an overview of how angels have been depicted in art, showing the drift from their strict theological representation in iconography, to the eventual childish Cherub of Renaissance art.
The author is well versed in the traditions of Christianity, being familiar with Catholic and Anglican history and authors, but most of the content is from the Eastern Orthodox perspective. Mother Alexandra is knowledgeable and concise, covering large stretches of history, theological thought, and even the history of art with ease and authority. Her writing even has occasional dashes of humor (brought out well by the narrator, Kristina Wenger.)
This is a great book for those unfamiliar with the ancient tradition of angels, and whose only exposure is their portrayal in art and media. It is also worth reading for any Christian, as her overview of Church history and theology is full of insight and warmth. A few of her references are dated, as this book was written during the Cold War. Yet many of the concerns she was addressing then are fully applicable now.
If this topic at all interests you, do yourself a favor and read this book.

Parenting Toward the Kingdom: Orthodox Christian Principles of Child-Rearing
This is the most amazing book about raising children! I have read the book and recently attended a conference with Dr. Mamalakis and I can say that I have both laughed and cried through the whole event. Dr. Mamalakis has the gift of sharing with you the most esential truths of family life in such a way that you copiously laugh at your own shortcomings and wake up the next day knowing it's time to change.

I Live Again: A Memoir of Ileana, Princess of Romania and Archduchess of Austria
I Live Again: A Memoir of Ileana Princess of Romania, Archduchess of Austria was a book that took me some time to get into. I typically gravitate toward more personal memoirs. I enjoy hearing the intimate details of life i.e. how it felt to mother, what relationships between husband and wife were like behind the public eye, etc… Princess Ileana’s memoir was in a decidedly different vein. Here was a figure whose public and private life seemed entirely consumed with people and country rather than self-interest. I could not easily wrap my head around it. Hearing that she had to leave her small baby at home while she traveled on hospital business left me wondering, “but how did she feel leaving her baby behind? Wasn’t she terrified?” However, as the book progressed, I was able to value her selflessness more. Even as her life and experiences left me wanting to know more, I could let that go and appreciate that her mindset was entirely taken up with the needs of others.
On a personal level, it was a shock to realize how little I knew of Romania’s experience of Russian occupation and the aftermath of World War II. Having a decidedly Western understanding of the second World War left considerable gaps in my knowledge of what the years following were like for most of Europe and perhaps especially Romania. Being in occupied territory. Being isolated, abandoned, hopeless. All these feelings and more and yet, Princess Ileana was always quick to point out the resilience and strength of her Romanian countrymen. Her pride in their ability to not have their spirits crushed was evident throughout the pages of this book.
It must have felt so surreal to have lived through two World Wars and then end up in rural Pennsylvania, Abbess of a Monastery. And yet, to read her story is to understand that such miracles are possible especially when experienced by a staunchly faithful person. No where in the pages of her memoir do you hear of her faith wavering. The horrors she witnessed and experienced could have and perhaps should have left her broken and terrified and yet they didn’t. I wonder if that was because her thoughts of herself were practically nonexistent. All the work she did, all the energy she expended were for one goal, to help ease the suffering of others. Her selflessness was absolutely incredible. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more of the history behind Princess Ileana of Romania.
Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
