Glad i found luna , very happy with my bbshd and my new luna chain ring.Wish the kit came with bottom bracket spacers. I had to wait and order them .

It's not even funny how much better this chainring is than the stock one. Excellent, light-yet-bulletproof construction and great tooth profile. Added offset greatly improved my chain line, though I did need 2 spacers to clear my chainstay on my Specialized Rockhopper 29. If you're going to use a BBSHD, you need this.

Great simple addition if you ride on the street and are worried about law enforcement. No problems so far.

Hey I want to write content for Luna .

I'm not confident I can write content although my own content ,I use on my wordpress sites is often stolen and used on other websites so maybe I can do it .

Heres some of my writing and I would also like to enter it in the builds forum .

I have several more builds coming up.

I have a small shop in my house with plenty of acoustic bike work from nearby but would rather do ebikes. It will probably be both.Theres no escape !

Well a few years ago another mechanic called me in response to a craigs ad and asked if I wanted to build an ebike shop in Corvallis OR. show gif

We had both have engineering degrees from Florida tech., although twenty years apart , along with some shop experience .

I did nothing with my degree due to USMC time and he had attended Raytheon for a decade.

I had been working in shops in Cal selling and working on ebikes in shops besides building hundreds of bikes for target ,sears, kmart etc.

We had no idea if the shop would work as it was still ebike siberia in OR at that time . Ebikes were rarely seen.

It worked and we sold well our first year ,nearly 200 ebikes . add ceb newpaper link,ceb site etc

Then covid ht and I moved to florida to help out my mom .

In the Oregon shop we installed several hub drives on various bikes and a few mid drive bafangs on bikes,recumbents & trikes .

It was fun but we ended up with a bunch of headaches as customers returned with various wear and /or compatability issues such as chainline etc. .

We decided to stop doing kits and sold alot of factory ebikes like Raleigh,Izip,Faraday .

All these companies had ebikes smoother than we could build at some good prices.

This was a while ago and since then things have improved in kit bikes and e-kit knowledge base and support mostly in approach to builds.

The biggest improvement was learning not to build on the wrong bikes or conversly always build on the right bikes .

Companies like Luna , California ebike, Johny Nerd Out & Grin tech.,to mention a few, are leading the way on getting indy newby builders , like me , up to speed and helping us avoid many problems.

So after a few years away I just had to build another kit bike.I had a strong desire to build good ebikes and here is the story of my first one in a few years .

My last ebike build was a two wheel drive very fun bike I never let anybody ride it as it was so dangerious ,see photo.

The front wheel would spin and pull you out of turns,very fun but sketchy.It had huge acceleration but was not durable.

I wanted this one to be safe and durable.

I wanted it to be as safe and durable as the factory bikes available which cost about $1000 -$2000 more per equal specifications.

This seemed doable after watching all the utube videos.It looked like alot of fun.

To begin well I decided to just copy an ebike I saw in a utube video to get more knowledge and keep building.

I also watched every Luna vid and read there entire website.

The Luna site is super well done .A veritable ebike university & prerequisite for aspiring builders.

My advice is to just go through the whole site. You will be glad you did.

Yes ,it looks familiar although I have a few cool engineering perks in there. I finally used my engineering degree,just kidding it's not the first time . I helped make a Suzuki into an ejeep about 35 years ago .

Right away I was glad for the Luna connector knowledge as the battery came with andersons which I quikly changed to xt90s as I enjoyed the luna advice and cool elevated no solder video.

If you go through the Luna site and pay attention you can't go very wrong and even a newby like me turned out a solid ebike which is also safe and durable .

Looking forward to the next build and now choosing compatible bikes to build onto for a lineup of folks wanting Bafang mid-drive ebikes .

This current build has became famous in this area of florida which is just leaving ebike siberia status.

It is happening rapidly and with the current economic situation ebikes are booming and the mid-drive Bafang solution is leading the way.

I'm motivated to get a cargo or tandem build going as utility bikes have always been my first love although I have road raced for decades with a recent switch to gravel .

Gravel ebikes is an exciting subject . They have to be strong, durable and safe . There is no suspension which will bring up design issues and improve the motors and accessories in a military way.

It's just getting better.

One thing I would like to do is get my first bike shop ,HBC add url , to set up ebike tours on Haleakala Maui along side it's acoustic bike tours . It would be a good application for the bafang motor. Forty miles of uphill to the summit 3 times a day.

Here is the story of my most recent build using a Luna kit with a battery purchased on ebay.

The new 2021 Mongoose Dolomite XLR I purchased via walmart .

The new dolomite has good specs to be easily compatable and safe along with good chainline charactaristics.

Unfortunately the bike had an issue right at the start that was no fun to resolve.

The cheap crank arm on the right side has an aluminum insert at the spindle.
Why are these cranks being designed this way? How often do mechanics think that thought per day?

So after trying myself with the correct tool and also 2 bike shops in town the threads were completely stripped . Nobody at any shop knew of a way to get it off the bike.

The left side crank arm came right off.

I took the frame home ,layed it on some milk crates and after hiitting it about 100 times with a framing hammer it finally fell off. After that the bottom bracket was easy to remove via the correct tool .

I was glad to get on with the build which went smooth with some referral to all the install youtubes available .

This is the new 2021 mongoose dolomite and it appears a bit more compatable than the old one due to the wider bottom bracket .

Chainline and clearances are perfect with no spacers and the included motor mount spacers are the right length also as if Bafang/Luna designed the kit for this bike.

I added the optional stabilizer bar which will probley be added to all the kits soon.

Between Luna and Utube the whole install was fun through to the shift sensor which works perfectly .

There was an anderson connector on the battery with an xt60 connector on the motor .

The luna super cool no solder vid sent me in the right direction .

I got the xt90s with pigtails and finished the build .

So after some running of the bike I have had to limit the gear range due to chain offs on the highest and lowest rear cogs.

This is not so much an issue as with a motor who needs 8 gears .Some people will want them though and for that I am looking at some options.

Solutions like a chainguide, thick thin tooth chainwheel and some others .

A chainguide with enough throw out to the chainwheel is not available so fabricating and there is not a thick thin chainwheel available that will work with this bikes clearance issues .

Hence the limited gears which,once again, are not so much an issue on a motored bike.

Humans need all those gears due to our lesser horspower .Motors like to spin up to high rpms and can easily cover any load issues due to their rpm range and strength.

Some other improvements I am thinking about is to try out a phaserunner controller for temperature control .

Adding fatty fenders and a trailer is next and I'm selling my car if my wife will let me.I'll have to moter up her bike of course.

It will greatly improve our lives and in florida who needs a car ?

Your programming box has allowed me to fine tune my BBSHD to near perfection.

Correct programming cable for Bafang BBS02. Others available on the internet often won't work with Windows 10.

The best upgrade I’ve done so far, I love the low end power the 58t gives.
