101 Orthodox Saints
This book is absolutely beautiful! It is a great resource for me, as a lot of the saints are new to me. I also really like the visuals in the top corner showing the icon of each saint, so that they can be found at church.

Everyday Saints and Other Stories
This book has been so helpful for my spiritual journey. The stories show the necessity for living an ascetic life...as well as reminding me that to be truly human, we must be filled with the Spirit of Christ.

Beautiful Pascha: An Orthodox Coloring Book for Children
This is the most comprehensive coloring on Pascha which includes all the Sundays leading to Pascha. It is very well illustrated and every family needs one whether all adults or has children. Adults who are visually oriented will benefit from both thinking about it and coloring it if they so desire.

The Orthodox Bible Study Companion Series (set of 13)
Fr. Farley is a joy to read. Reading his commentary on the Acts of the Apostles along with the daily reading has provided a wealth of additional context that has deeply enriched my appreciation of the experience of the Apostles in the nascent church. Strongly recommend for anyone who (like me) struggles to maintain a practice of reading the scriptures. You will not be disappointed!

Thirsting For God in a Land of Shallow Wells

The Children’s Bible Reader (paperback)
We started reading this bible to our children in the evenings during Lent. They all love it! The enjoy the pictures and often spend extra time looking through it outside of our reading sessions.
The stories are well told, but I do think they are abridged a little too much in some places. However, this is a great children's bible, maybe the best I have yet found.

Children in the Church Today: An Orthodox Perspective
This short book may be one of the best parenting books I have read. I was very struck by how practical and balanced Sister Magdalen's perspective is.
The book gives some advice for the whole lifetime of the child, starting with praying for one's child before conception and during a pregnancy and birth, and going through how to parent young adults who abandon their faith.
She suggests teaching young children to focus on a love for Christ, His mother and the saints, and to rarely if ever mention demons and hell to them. She explains how many Christians leave their faith entirely to escape the fear of hell, and how love is a much more powerful teacher.
She goes on to give advice about all different areas in a child's life: what kind of entertainment they should have, friendships they should form, teaching them about prayer and taking them to church, fostering their relationship with a spiritual father, the importance of Christian community, etc.
Through it all she advises balance and not overdoing it, lest the child see religion as too heavy a burden. She sees the child as a child, who needs to hear "traditional English stories" and not just scripture, who needs to have fun activities, friends, and music. She says than even saints in general have "normal childhoods" and didn't pray and fast all day from their infancy! Her practical views debunk the idea that our children should be saints from childhood and something is really wrong if they, for example, see church as boring or want to dress like non-Christian friends. The view was a great relief to me!
She refers often to St. John Chrysostom, quoting his advice on these topics and suggesting how to apply it in today's world.
She gives special attention to the teen years and issues that arise there, and again I was struck by how very balanced her view was. She advises the parent not to fight over clothes, music, etc but to try to keep a strong relationship with the child and to guide him to a love of Christ.
Another important point she made was that parents should not show shock at a child's feelings or opinions but always give him freedom to be completely honest, not judging him for his statements, and in this way the parent can have a greater ability to guide him. If the parent shows upset or judgement, the child will simply stop being open.
I started putting this point into practice right away with my oldest daughter, 9, and right away saw what a difference it made in our relationship. I listened to her statements such as she loves our dog more than her little brothers or she hates what we eat for breakfast without scolding her, as I would have in the past; instead I replied that I am glad she is enjoying the dog so much and asked her what she would prefer to have for breakfast, then made a plan with her to cook that soon.
These are little things, but I saw how differently she responded to me when she saw me as accepting her input and not judging her. I can already see that listening to her without judging will make a huge difference over the years. When she sees that I listen to her and accept her, she calms down and opens up right away.
There is so much more in this little book! I will be reading it over and over.
