The Essentials: An Orthodox Christian Catechism
This small book packs a large punch. Without going into too much detail, Fr Pavel answers many introductory questions that an inquirer into the Orthodox faith may have. I teach catechism in my parish, so I use a variety of introductory books when creating and refining my lesson plans. While Fr Pavel’s book does not add much in terms of content to my collection, he expresses the faith in a way that an unchurched person can understand easily. His pastoral experience is apparent in his explanation of the Church’s prayer and fasting guidelines. The editors also did an excellent job of including the practices of various traditions/jurisdictions when appropriate. I can certainly see myself recommending this book to inquirers who may be very new to Orthodoxy or don’t have the time to read more in depth catechetical books.

The Voyage of Saint Brendan
This book by Mike Stonelake, who also illustrated Stubborn Love: A Story of St. Maria of Paris (whose day it happens to be today) and Good News, Bad News, is an enjoyable telling of the events of St. Brendan the Navigator's life.
I read it with my 11-year-old son, and we shared a favorite scene, where the pilgrims find that they have unknowingly celebrated the Paschal liturgy on the back of a whale they took to be an island!
While the art is dynamic and really gives the feeling of being on a journey, the characters are unapologetically Orthodox and represent the life of ancient monks and pilgrims well.
If you are looking for a book for kids who love graphic novels, and you want the message to be inspiring while still telling an exciting story, The Voyage of St. Brendan is definitely what you are looking for.

Memory Eternal: Living with Grief as Orthodox Christians
I saw this author speak at a retreat and bought this there. She was a great presenter and facilitator. It's easy to read, has a lot of theology/Scripture/Church fathers, and we are doing the bereavement group guide at my parish.

Know the Faith: A Handbook for Orthodox Christians and Inquirers
For those who are curious, this is the perfect book. It does not “in your face” pushing to the Orthodox Christian FAith, but just tells the facts. It is the PERFECT book for those “inquiring”. I was just visiting in Sarasota, Florida and went to the Greek Fest at St. Barbara GOC and suggested to the person at their book table concerning this book. They had not heard of it, but were curious. Thanks for making this available. Harieklia, St. Sophia GOC bookstore, Bellingham, Washington.

Prayers in the Dark: Meditations on Suffering from the Book of Lamentations
Father Lawrence explores the poems of Book of Lamentations. He retells and explains the poems and then, in his Meditations, which are essentially sermons, he separately talks about suffering of betrayal, poverty, bereavement, sickness, and persecution. I think his study is a powerful reminder for the Western culture that suffering is an unavoidable, normal part of life. We get too comfortable here in US - I know I do. We are well fed, well clothed, relying on many commodities of modern life. Suffering seems like an unnatural thing. It is not. Not in this life anyway. I forget that I am supposed to suffer. But the book is not depressing, rather pointing in the right direction.
I was also especially amazed about the timing - I got to read his Meditation on Suffering of Sickness just before my medical procedure. It was a great consolation.

Akathist to Jesus Christ for a Loved One Who has Fallen Asleep
Very comforting Akathist. Our son died a few months ago and this Akathist has helped me very much. I had an older edition of the booklet, though, and the words could be used for either a male or a female. Not sure why the Akathist in this edition was written twice, one for males and one for females. Nevertheless, thank you very much for making this available for the grieving. I bought multiple copies to pass out to others. If you are reading this, please pray for the repose of our dearly beloved son, Brendan.

Prayer Bracelet, 33 knots with silver-tone cross and 2 black beads
Very nice prayer rope, fills good in the hand, knots go easy when you pray, beautiful silver tone cross. Would have given it five stars but it had 29 knots instead of 33 as in description, counting 2 black beads and the cross gives 32. Not a big deal but need to remember to say one more prayer on top.

Pilgrimage to Pascha: A Daily Devotional for Great Lent
I love this devotional! The scripture for the day follows the Lexicon which keeps you in tune. There is personal application, prayers, hymns as well as a teaching about a Saint for each day. I found it to be very enriching, to the point and the perfect length for a devotional.

Let's Build Our Church (board book)
I was so excited when this book landed on our doorstep! It’s such a fun story—the girls (ages 3–9) and I all laughed at the illustrations and the many silly details. Of course, being a priest’s wife myself, I was partial to the matushka, but the “potluck lady” was probably my favorite character! You can tell the author and illustrator have truly lived our faith, and that authenticity really adds to the experience of the story. This is such a sweet and encouraging book for the boys and girls in your life. It’s an extra bonus if your boys love construction and all the equipment, but truly any child will enjoy this story. This may be the best board book I’ve seen published in a long time!

I have ot completed reading all the stories but have enjoyed the ones I have read. They are much lighter than most of my Spiritual reading, and a kind of a break. They are thought provoking.

The Voyage of Saint Brendan
I really enjoyed voyaging with St Brendan. The imagery is wonderful - it really felt like I was on a journey - Mike Stonelake is able to create lovely atmospheric scenes that perfectly support the story. There is drama aplenty which, while fantastical at times, feels also believable and human. Ultimately, the story is one of hope and a clarion call to live our lives with curiosity and a sense of adventure, whether in an everyday or a spiritual sense. Transporting stuff!

The Voyage of Saint Brendan
I really enjoyed this book. The colourful cover caught my attention and imagination. The voyage of Brendan is portrayed in comic style and took me back to my own childhood, when I would read comic strips and had freedom to let my imagination wander. It is refreshing to have that’s child’s eye again. The map was a favourite page and always a good start for any epic journey…

Thinking Orthodox: Understanding and Acquiring the Orthodox Christian Mind
Excellent unferstanding of the essence of Christianity and how this essence helps the church come together as the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit working within us keeps the understanding of the Church rooted and continues to guide us these two thousand years.

Prayers in the Dark: Meditations on Suffering from the Book of Lamentations
Lovely. One could fly through this book, the writing is beautiful, but I found I wanted to sit with each section. The historical introduction and commentary immerses the reader into the time Lamentations was written. The reflections bring the themes into modern times and reflect on ones choices and actions. The book isn't long, but the ideas are, this is one I will come back to more than once. It would make an interesting group read but also wonderful for self study and reflection.
