The Voyage of Saint Brendan
This book was an incredible read.
I learned alot about St. Brendan I didn't know. The artwork is beautiful. And there's a historical note after the story which goes into a littke more background. There's also a beautiful icon of St. Brendan on the back of the book. I highly recommend this book! I wanted this book for son as he's named after St. Brendan.

Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe
I gifted this to my brother in law who is an Anglican Frier and he said it was very good. In fact, he has three people who want to read it when he’s done.

The Voyage of Saint Brendan
As someone who has long loved both the story of St Brendan and Tintin, this book, and the artistic style of its retelling of the voyage of the holy Irish monk brings me deep joy. First of all, it is beautiful. The artwork both in its content and its arrangement give some sense as to the wonder of seeing such places and creatures for the first time. Throughout the story large panels illustrate breathtaking scenery that reminds one of the awe of God's creation. Delightfully illustrated maps capture the full breadth of the adventure and wonder. The fact that the maps are interspersed in the narrative make the episodic nature of the saint's journey much easier to keep track of.
Significant portions of the story are comunicated with no words or very little diolouge at all, just the beautiful illustrated panels. Like the silent monks the saint and his brethern encounter, this restraint of diolouge somehow gives the story both a peaceful and anticiptory quality.
In its telling of such a thoroughly Orthodox story, the book does a wonderful job of capturing and expressing the Orthodox spirit of Medieval Irish monasticism and its unique culture. Characters sing verses from many Psalms and hymns, and even a few historical prayers in Latin are presented without translation, giving a real feel for the life of prayers and psalm reading that girded the Orthodox monastic tradition in Ireland. In one place St Brendan sings a few lines from the famous ancient Orthodox Irish hymn Be Thou my Vision, which has long been a beloved hymn of mine personally and gave me a feeling of both being immersed in the world of St Brendan's time, and connected to the very same Orthodox faith in the present.
The book also does a fair job of weaving in this continuity of the faith for those less familiar with either St Brendan or Medieval Irish Orthodxy in general. The story partly acomlishes this by the scattered inclusion of a few prayers that are anachronistic to St Brendan but readily familiar to modern Orthodox readers. At a much deeper level, the clear celebration of the Holy Mysteries thoughout the book firmly establishs the shared Orthodoxy of St Brendan's time and ours. A wide variety of psalm references are also scattered throughout, assiting in the atmosphere by giving the reader a small taste of the monastic tradition of psalm chanting.
The origional story is a not simply an adventure tale or a recounting of a historic voyage. It is so a parable of the Christian's journey of salvation to God. The way this book captures St Brendan's piety, zeal for God, and wisdom in guiding his monks, makes it a fitting retelling of that part of the story as well.
The author easily could have turned the story of St Brendan into a multi volume series. The choice instead of key elements of the adventure linked together in a single narrative gives the story a cohesive whole and wets the appitite to go further and get to know St Brendan better. A short historical section in the back includes useful information, including the mention of a modern expedition that recreated the voyage in an authentic reconstructed period boat. It would have been helpful to have also included the actual names of the sources we get the story of St. Brendan from: so that young Orthodox readers who will be inspired to learn more can read the full stories themselves. The two main works are the Navigatio and Vita and are available in English translations but copies can be a little difficult to find without help.
The mythic truth of the Christian journey, the epic adventure involved following Christ, and the love and faithfulness of God through trials all shine through this wonderful retelling. A delightful read from start to finsh.

Highly recommended for all ages. "Holy" informative: historical, fun facts, beautifully illustrated. Love the maps, the symbols. Each bio is brief and satisfying, but still leaves room for those who want to explore more on their own. Love the range of familiar and unfamiliar saints from all over the globe.

It is a nice book with drawings; however, the problem with this children’s prayer book is that it uses old KJV English. Please tell me which child on this green planet speaks and read 1611 English style?

Prayers in the Dark: Meditations on Suffering from the Book of Lamentations
This wonderful reflection by Fr Lawrence Farley is yet another display of his incredible weaving together of biblical scholarship with pastoral experience. He explores themes related to loss and suffering through the lens of the Book or Lamentations. Why does God allow evil, pain, suffering, and death? These are the questions addressed by the prophet and by Fr Lawrence. He also weaves in modern day anecdotes and teachings of the Orthodox Church to argue that our suffering is given a new meaning—is transfigured—in Christ.
Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone, Orthodox or otherwise, who asks these same questions. We all experience grief and suffering, no matter how big or small. The Book of Lamentations and Fr Lawrence’s commentary offer a message of hope that our suffering is temporary but the Kingdom of Heaven is everlasting.

A Saint’s Guide to Praying with Your Feet
The story of St. Elizabeth the Wonderworker was new to me, and I loved how it inspired A Saint's Guide to Praying with Your Feet. It took the story of a noteworthy female saint and made it relatable to children (and adults) of all ages who may struggle with the wiggles or restlessness during church services.
I found it useful to read the book several times on my own before sharing with my little church school friends. This allowed me to soak in the message of the book and appreciate the repetition of themes and action that helped get the main point across. My young students particularly liked the dragon and the little animals quietly shown throughout, and I know that all of them could relate to struggling to be still in church (as can I).
I especially appreciated the fact that the main character of Elizabeth is shown as being persistent, even though frustrated, in her attempts to grow spiritually. Her spiritual growth is shown in several ways: asking the Abbess for advice and coming back when she needs more advice, trying out the ideas that the Abbess gives her, and persisting in her attempts to overcome her struggles even if she doesn't do it perfectly the first or second time she tries. Showing a wise spiritual mother (or father) providing direction to Elizabeth during her struggles is a wonderful example for children to see. Her guidance helped Elizabeth build the courage she needed to overcome the dragon.
I also liked the silent storytelling of having the icon of St. George shown in the illustrations. This provides another point of discussion with young readers. I appreciated inclusion of the deacon's movements during vespers and the nun's bodily prayers of prostrations before the icons. There are so many ways to pray in the Orthodox church. Elizabeth's story brings this reality to life, along with the benefits of persistent spiritual effort. As another parent said about the character of Elizabeth: Her weakness became her strength. This lesson is appropriate for everyone! Thank you for the opportunity to review this thoughtful book.

101 Orthodox Saints
This book is so helpful for adults coming into the orthodox faith. It is overwhelming entering in as a new believer coming from a different religious background, but this book has been a wonderful brief introduction to a multitude of saints. My husband and I are looking forward to purchasing 102 Saints sometime soon.

The Voyage of Saint Brendan
If you are looking for another great saint book to add to your library, this is it! I read it with my 7 yr old and he loved it! We have read many versions of St. Brendan's life and this story does a wonderful job of blending the mythical with the real experiences of his journey. I hope we can get a lot more saint stories like this.

A Saint’s Guide to Praying with Your Feet
This book is an absolute favorite in our house! The artwork is beautiful and engaging, with illustrations that pull kids right into the story from the very first page. The storyline is wonderful—thoughtful, fun, and easy for children to connect with—making it a joy to read aloud.
My kids have asked to read this book over and over again. It’s consistently their first pick at story time, and they never seem to get tired of it. We tossed it in our church quiet toys bag, and it got read again and again during liturgy. The parents loved it as much as the kids.
