I have been praying this Akathist Service every night since June when my beloved Kh. Maggie Priscilla fell asleep in the Lord, so I'm very familiar with the beauty and depth and richness of the prayers. The prayers have comforted me and given me peace in my grief journey. Thank you for re-printing the service in the beautiful format you've produced. It is clear and easy (in my case) to go to the section designated for a departed woman - I appreciate that little attention to detail! The artwork is beautiful as well. Patrick Reardon whizzes back and forth from the Old and New Testament with such precision and depth of understanding, I abandoned all my other books to read just Christ in the Psalms. He transformed my understanding of the Psalms. I am sorry I did not read this book fifty years ago.

I bought 5 of the icon magnets for our house. These are wonderful, and I can keep them at eye level for our two children (6 and under). Very well made! Very happy with this purchase.

I found Painless, Blameless, and Peaceful to be deeply moving and remarkably easy to read. Fr. Stavros structures the book in short reflections that invite prayerful thought and personal reflection. Each section concludes with verses from the Psalms that beautifully reinforce the theme and draw the reader more deeply into meditation on God’s Word while allowing a gentle transition to the next topic.

Many of the stories Fr. Stavros shares from his ministry as an Orthodox priest have stayed with me, especially as I consider my own mortality. Yet this is not only a book about death or dying well in the Orthodox tradition—it is, above all, an invitation to live well. Through gentle wisdom and pastoral insight, Fr. Stavros reminds us that the true work of this life is the nurturing and healing of relationships, especially our relationship with God.

This book offers both comfort and challenge, encouraging us to live with love, forgiveness, and peace so that, when the time comes, we may truly depart this life “painless, blameless, and peaceful.”

As a hospice nurse, the petition in Divine Liturgy that asks “for a Christian ending to our lives” has always been a time for me to remember my patients, family, and friends. I was very excited to read this book, and I was not disappointed.

This book brings a beautiful, comforting approach to the Orthodox understanding of death. The reader is gently led through how to deal with tragedy, preparing for your own death, end-of-life decision making, the family’s role in death, the moment of death itself, and the Orthodox funeral service. Practical advice is woven with anecdotes and personal stories to help the reader consider their own death.

One of the most important gifts you can leave your loved ones is the knowledge of your wishes before you are no longer able to share them. This book could be an important family resource in considering your faith in your decision making (especially the chapters on tough decisions and the family’s role). I would recommend making coffee for your family and sitting down with an advanced directive to go over it together.

I would be remiss not to mention colon cancer screening guidelines have recently changed because of the growing number of young adults developing this disease, and screening now begins at age 45. Breast cancer screening begins with a baseline at age 35 and yearly starting at 40. Cervical cancer screening begins at age 21. Lung cancer screening can begin at age 50 based on your history. In truth, all cancer screenings can begin earlier based on your history and lifestyle, and best discussed and planned with your family physician.

With so many pop culture books out there with distracting themes and elements, it's hard to find books for a teen that pull them closer to the Lord.

My 12 year old daughter and 9 year old son love this book. I hope they make more of these!

I got this book for a friend who is struggling with SSA. I read it before giving it to him, and found it had much to say concerning our humanity and our life in Christ and our striving with our passions whatever form they take. Father Thomas Hopko is a treasure!
