Becoming Truly Human: The Film
This is a beautiful film.
It is beautiful in its cinematography, beautiful in its simplicity, in its art and humanity. I appreciate the honest and generous way it deals with those who consider themselves “religiously unaffiliated.”
I recommend this film to anyone - Orthodox, Agnostic, Protestant, or Atheist - who is willing to ask questions about life, God and self.
This film answers no questions. It asks them. These are the questions that all people must ask themselves at some point on their journey to Becoming Truly Human.

This is a good introductory read
Garden in the East: The Spiritual Life of the Body
This is a good introductory read for any Orthodox Christian who needs a reminder that our bodies are US, not an object outside of our lives. We are mind, body, spirit. This is great for anyone whose been stuck in Western concepts of the body for a while and needs a refresh in valuing their whole self. Easy to read.

I would like more people to read & know about
Truly Human: Recovering Your Humanity in a Broken World
I never write book reviews even though I read many books, but I thought I might write one for this book, because I really would like more people to read and know about it.

The author Kevin Scherer has been a pastor and Eastern Orthodox priest who served at Ground Zero after 911 as well as Virginia Tech as chaplain. He shares some of his experiences at these tragic places and what he has learned from them. Other than that, he writes a lot about the logic of suffering, sin (he calls them vices), and the relationship of these things to a life in God and we are redeemed from our broken humanity.

What I like about this book is that his perspective is a unique one that comes from real experience. His concepts are clear and nuanced without being burdensome. You get the sense that he is not laying out theory from his mind, but rather from his heart where he has experienced all these things. His honesty comes through the page, and it's clear that it all comes from his very mature character.

I will certainly read this book again. It is not a long book but will take several reads to really understand all the points for me. All in all, I am very happy that I have come across this book!

When You Pray: A Practical Guide to an Orthodox Life of Prayer
This gem of a book delivers on what it promises: practical help in the admittedly difficult discipline of prayer. What makes prayer especially difficult is our modern culture of distraction. Letendre faces it head on with wit, wisdom, encouragement and sound Orthodox theology and experience as an anchor. Refreshingly ecumenical as well (quotations and references from CS Lewis, Jean Vianney, Brother Lawrence, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and others), I hope (and pray!) it will jump start the prayer life of many Christians. It is a quick read, well organized, and for that reason should be kept on hand in case you need a refresher. Never give up, start today, keep praying--this Christ-centered guide points all Christians to what prayer is all about: communion with God so we may become more like Christ, by His grace. Seriously, other books on prayer are good, and you may need to select your best Book of Prayers for use, but this guide is a keeper; even for those who have already developed a habit of prayer, it offers helpful reminders.

Great Devotionals
The Morning Offering
My wife, three year old son, and I have enjoyed Abbot Tryphon's week-day devotionals on Ancient Faith Radio for a few years now. Getting to have the same quality of devotional reading for each day of the year has proven to be a great benefit to our walk with the Lord.

The Trial of Job: Orthodox Christian Reflections on the Book of Job
This is perfect for what it is: devotional help for studying Job. I had read Job a number of times and never "got it." Not that this book cured me of all ignorance, but it certainly began to lift the veil. A good introductory work. If you want the end-all-be-all work, go to a work Reardon references: Moral Reflections on the Book of Job, by St. Gregory the Great. (I recommend Cistercian Publications' rendition.) But beware, that masterpiece is five volumes long with the fifth volume about to go to print.

So, as I said, Reardon's work is helpful and easy to follow. For what it is'an assistant for devotional reading'I give it five stars. That doesn't mean it is the most complete work out there, but it is a rare breed who will take on St. Gregory the Great's work. This is more for the average reader not willing to commit to five volumes.

The Cup runneth over (with insights)
Reclaiming the Atonement, Volume 1: The Incarnate Word
Fr. Patrick digs deep into the wider and deeper understanding of salvation as the Orthodox Church understand it. The first few chapters dig right into the way this understanding of salvation compares and contrasts with those that diverge from it, but he does not use demeaning terminology to do so. After these chapters he unfolds this great mystery, our salvation, as it relates to various portions of divine revelation from the Holy Scriptures, and their interpretation. One might ask how these chapters relate to the subject, and the answer to this is that Fr. Patrick is drawing out and illustrating some of the at-one-ment's countless and ultimately ineffable facets. And he does so with a wealth of insights, as he is a true scholar, in a way that is understandable to his readers who are not scholars, though it most surely helps to have some biblical study and theological reading under one's belt in order to follow his train of thought. A short addendum summarizes the book.

An Introduction to God: Encountering the Divine in Orthodox Christianity
Please do not get caught up over the title of this book! Some readers may dismiss it's message thinking that this is a little league publication. Nothing could be further from the truth. What this book will do is provide you with a sturdy foundation upon which to build your Christian faith. The author is even brave enough to tackle some basic existential questions most authors would shy away from. A caveat to this book is that Fr. Andrew's warm, easy going personality is on display throughout these pages inviting you to indeed encounter the Divine. So even though the title implies that this is an introduction of sorts, it is a home run in any spiritual ballpark -- Little, Minor, or Major League!

A book to glean from!
Know the Faith: A Handbook for Orthodox Christians and Inquirers
I found this book extremely helpful in laying out the various views within Christianity regarding the most central and important issues of the church:

Salvation, mercy, grace, worship, Eucharistic practices, icons, and more.

For those who have come from a non-Orthodox background, such as Protestantism or Catholicism, this book does a marvelous job of not only explaining the differences in views, but the history of how those differences in theology came to be, along with---most importantly--scripture references, the views of the apostolic and patristic fathers.

In many parts of the book I was moved to tears as the beautiful explanations of what Christ has done for us, and what our response is to Him.

I highly recommend this book for those seeking to better understand the ancient apostolic faith, its history, and the variant views of the Roman Catholic Church and Protestantism.

there is great wisdom, understanding
In the Eyes of Your Creator: Truly Valuing Yourself and Others
George MacDonald once tellingly wrote, 'We are often unable to tell people what they need to know, because they want to know something else, and would therefore only misunderstand what we said' (Lilith, ch. 9). Dr. David L. Fontes, a psychologist and an Orthodox Christian priest, relates in this book, In the Eyes of Your Creator, how he also has had difficulty trying to convince clients of things they don't want to hear about. We live in a post-Christian, secular culture whose sense of value is completely warped. 'Value' today is typically understood in terms of money, conspicuous consumption, and narcissism. Fontes' book challenges the very concept of 'value' as it is understood today. He claims that a correct notion of 'value' has its roots in God, not in ourselves, not in our national identity, nor our culture.Fontes writes from the perspective of Orthodox (Eastern) Christianity, and he draws upon not only the Scriptures, but also Church Fathers, and his own experience as a psychologist and a priest; thus, some of the ideas in his book may be misunderstood, especially by those people who may not want to hear what they need to hear. Nevertheless, there is great wisdom, understanding, and compassion in the pages of this little volume. The book has two parts: Part I is about valuing ourselves with God at the center of everything; any and all sense of our personal value necessarily comes from God, Who created us in the first place to be in a relationship with Him. Part II is about properly valuing others (family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.). At its core, Fontes' book is a practical meditation on Jesus' words in Mark 12:29-31 (quoted on p. 225): 'The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.'If we could actually internalize and live out these two commandments, we would naturally value both God and all those around us. Fontes' book provides some very practical advice on how to do so.
