Journey to Reality: Sacramental Life in a Secular Age
Finally, a book for inquirers from a non-Christian background. For too long have Orthodox publishers been producing content for Protestant and Catholic audiences with very little consideration for those from an agnostic / irreligious background. Dr Porcu understands that perceptive and writes pointedly and profoundly as an Orthodox author. He doesn't assume too much of his audience and isn't afraid to start at fundamental levels, using philosophy, insight and history to the book's advantage.

Do not let the seeming brevity of this book fool you; it is an large undertaking and landscape which Porcu eases his reader into with his refreshing analogies and helpful images, whilst keeping the trajectory of the book clear and concise. It is obvious to me how good of a read Dr Porcu has on the current cultural climate, yet he writes with such scholarly insight and precision.
I look forward to recommending this book to inquirers at my own parish and providing it in our bookstore for years to come.

The Ancient Faith Prayer Book, deluxe edition
This book is outstanding. I bought it last February (2023) when I began to seriously discern converting to Orthodoxy from the Lutheran tradition in which I had been raised, and with it, I prayed my way out of protestantism. Since becoming Catholic, I have tried several Catholic prayer books, of both the Eastern and Western rites, and few have come close to the combination of richness and ease of use provided by this book. You can essentially mark your place with the ribbon and move from page to page as you pray through the day, without unnecessary page flips. As I am a parent of young children, I keep returning to this book due to the way the book is structured allows you to pray in a way that fits your schedule, as the hours appear to be a mix of traditional devotional prayers for a given time of day and the small Horologion and for this reason, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, especially for parents who desire richness in their prayer but don't have time to pray 30-40 minutes in a single sitting.

The book itself is beautifully bound and translated, durable, and has withstood a year of daily use without much wear and tear other than a few creases in the spine. The form factor is not pocket-sized but is thin and fits nicely in your hand or in a bag to bring with you everywhere. The contents cover a wide breadth, including an excellent and flexible rule of prayer for the hours (Morning - 6 & 9am, Afternoon - 12 & 3 pm, a very short Vespers, and a nice Compline) which include 3 psalms for each hour, as well as prayers before & after receiving the Eucharist, prayers for occasions, family life, and prayers of Saints from both the Eastern and Western Traditions.

Pray Without Ceasing? How?

The Little Way of a Pilgrim
Jennifer Anna Rich invites her readers to walk alongside a likable protagonist, who suddenly decides one day to go on a wandering quest to try to find the meaning of something that he heard in church, “Pray without ceasing.” He can’t imagine praying and not ever stopping, so he goes walking to try to learn more about this idea from others. On his journey, this friendly wanderer meets a great variety of people, and he asks them his driving question, hoping to learn what they know about unceasing prayer.

Diana-Elena Popescu’s rich colored pencil drawings warm the reader with images that are visually comforting (all except for one, which by necessity is not). Her use of predominantly warm tones emphasize the light and warmth that pull the wanderer closer to the answer to his quest. The reader themself feels enveloped by the light and warmth, drawn inexplicably into the scene and soothed and comforted by it (with, of course, that one exception).

Journey to Reality: Sacramental Life in a Secular Age
I was so excited to read about this book that I couldn't wait to order a copy and instead bought the kindle format so I could begin right away. The book did not disappoint and in fact, as I read chapters, I knew that I have to buy copies as gifts for people who would not otherwise come across this book.

The author explains things in such simplistic terms! It is easy for anyone to understand.

How do we live in reality? What is reality? Don't we have to know that first? What is religion? What is Christianity?

He is like St. Patrick who it is said explained the Trinity using a shamrock. He uses the images of a family and quite often talks about electricity.

His chapter on who is God uses concepts such as water and t how a family is configured to explain how God can be One and also three persons. And it makes so much sense! He constantly refers to this highest being as the "arche" - the Greek word that means first or primary.

He beings his discussion of the fall of man as the arche being the power and we must be plugged into the power to have life. (what happens when an appliance stops working- don't we check the power supply?) We have life, energy because we have plugged into the power supply - the arche. That's very simple to understand. And the Fall is when Adam disconnected from the power supply. I think we all can see that.

So, how is the disconnect restored? Jesus became man in the Incarnation so he is both God and man. He is the direct connection to the arche as God and man (in the form of Jesus) are one. So Jesus becomes that power strip that we can connect to so that we once again have life! Jesus, because He the arche, "is the ultimate source of all electricity - He is electricity itself."

When he gets to the sacraments, the author goes back to electricity and talks about how the plugs when unplugged can rust and decay. The plugs don't fit anymore. Baptism is what cleans are repairs the plugs so that the one baptized can plug back into the power source.

He reminds us that the power strip is not what makes electrical things work. It is the electricity. But that electricity needs to be regulated to be safe. The arche needs to be in a form that is usable for us. God could not give us his body and blood if He didn't have them. Jesus became incarnate to that He could give us his body and blood so that we could reeceive the electricity without bing harmed.

His section on marriage is wonderful! And he likens the position of the priest to the electrician who has specific knowledge and training to be able to install and repair the electrical systems. Just as electricians have a license to show they have this knowledge, a priest receives this "license" through ordination.

And the book goes on and on.

I can't recommend this book more highly. I wish I could give it 10 stars!

6 Hours, 7 Lessons: How Christ’s Light Transcends Our Darkness
Fr. Nicholas Louh and Dr. Roxanne Louh deliver practical Christianity in a no-nonsense manner making the teachings of Jesus relevant to our daily lives. In "6 Hours 7 Lessons " you are taken on an in-depth journey of the final hours of the crucifixion of Jesus. The 7 final statements Jesus made from the cross, are used as teaching points that have much relevance for each of us in our daily lives. This book is easy to read and easy to understand. The presentation is remarkable in tying in these lessons to each one of us. This was a great follow-up text to The Louhs initial volume "Renewing You". I will cherish and refer to both of these books for many years to come.

From Object to Icon: The Struggle for Spiritual Vision in a Pornographic World
Andrew Williams masterfully addresses an extremely sensitive topic. He does so with care and precision, illuminating the ways in which our entire worldview has sunk into the pornographic as we see only the ways in which we can “use” others and created things for superficial short-sighted ends. He does so while never sounding harsh and critical of others, as we are all in this mess together. The medicine is to be found in looking through the veils of creation into the light of Christ within and connected to the icon; whether written on church walls, or in the faces of other human beings we encounter daily. Can’t recommend this book enough!

Journey to Reality: Sacramental Life in a Secular Age
I found this book easy to read and understand. I especially liked the illustration in chapter 4 on the fall being like one unplugging oneself from a power strip, and all of Part III, Sacred and Secular. I do not like the cover picture, however. It looks to me like a witch's or wizard's brew coming out of the chalice! Maybe change the cover?

The Little Way of a Pilgrim
The Little Way of a Pilgrim by Jennifer Anna Rich is a lovely picture book that is perfect for this Lenten season and any time. A young man sets off from home with his backpack, his Bible and a quest - to find out what it means to “Pray without ceasing”. Along the way he encounters several people who advise him on prayer, until he comes upon an old woman who provides him with the final piece of what he has been looking for. Diana-Elena Popescu’s simple and colorful illustrations give life and warmth to the pages as our pilgrim discovers the value of the Jesus Prayer, which can fill our hearts with peace and love. The Little Way of a Pilgrim is a beautiful addition to home libraries of children of all ages!
