Good News, Bad News
I bought this for my teenage granddaughters, and started to read it when it arrived…I could not put it down, and finished the whole book. It is great! Suitable for all ages. I ordered more to give as Christmas gifts for other “children” who I thought would enjoy it! Thank you!

Akathist to the Mother of God: Nurturer of Children
It is a great little booklet, very well designed and printed on high quality paper. The Akathist takes about 15 minutes to read in its entirety. There are also several other prayers at the end of the booklet. I bought several extra copies to pass out to my friends who have small children.

The Age of Nihilism: Christendom from the Great War to the Culture Wars
The excellent fourth volume in a superb series. Fr. Dr. Strickland's four volumes constitute one of the best histories of Christianity available. Though, the work is not a academic work per se, nothing on this scale could be, it lays out for the scholar and the layman the intellectual history of Christendom in a brilliant readable fashion. Typically, histories of Christianity treat Orthodoxy as a side show, if at all, while favoring either the Roman Catholic Church or the Protestant Reformation and its descendant churches point of view. Strickland avoids a full-throated partisan defense of Orthodoxy while still over the course of the four volumes pointing out where the West wandered away from the Transformational Imperative of a Paradise centered faith. In this fourth volume of his history of Christendom from Paradise to Nihilism, he deals very well with the intellectual currents of the late 19th and all of the 20th Centuries that have led us to the edge of the abyss staring at nothingness and meaninglessness. He quite correctly points out that the present climate also affects the Orthodox Christian community as we swim in the sea of culture and breathe the air of the anti-philosophy of nihilism. But we can not despair, Fr. Strickland also points toward the great reservoir of our faith and how we as the Orthodox Christian Church possess the spiritual and philosophical "lifeboat," if we but seek the Transformational Imperative and the actions resulting from that. If you haven't read the first three volumes, you might feel a little lost for a while as you being, Strickland refers back to previous volumes and patterns of thought he describes in those earlier books. You'll catch on if you are patient with it. But buy all four volumes.

"It was really good!"-10 year old boy
As an Orthodox parent, I enjoyed reading this book with my elementary aged boys. It is a short, easy read with short chapters that makes it perfect for reading before bed. My 10, 8, and 6 year old boys all enjoyed it and found they could relate to one or the other of the 2 main characters. We identified with their struggles and the plot kept us guessing until the end. It's a sweet story that encourages the reader to think about right and wrong, obedience, charity, and more.

The Age of Nihilism: Christendom from the Great War to the Culture Wars
In The Age of Nihilism, Fr. John Strickland brings to a conclusion his four-volume history of Christendom and it is a phenomenal capstone to this venture. I only read the third volume, The Age of Utopia, but I did not feel as lost as I did in that one as Fr. John ties the cultural and political movements in this volume back to the previous volumes quite seamlessly and this aids the reader in understanding the overarching themes of the entire series.
Fr. John opens this volume with a section titled “The Specter of Nihilism” and illustrates the rise of this pessimistic view of humanity through the experiences of two men—Friedrich Nietzsche and Fyodor Dostoevsky. I felt that the pairing of these two writers perfectly encapsulates the later ideas that Fr. John brings forth later on. Not only do the two figures complement each other well, they also tie the entirety of the upcoming 20th century to the previous age of utopia that was covered in the preceding volume.
Throughout this work, Fr. John repeatedly writes about the counterfeits to the vision presented by the early Church of heavenly immanence and transformation. This is most notable in the long section where Fr. John elaborates on the major ideologies of the mid-2th century—Communism, Naziism, and Liberalism. His presentation of these ideologies was refreshing as I think it is very easy for those in the modern West to dismiss too easily the ideas of Naziism and, to a lesser degree, Communism given the horrendous track-record of each of these worldviews. However, liberalism, if not actually engaged and critiqued, is too easily imbibed as it is such a big part of our culture. One of the most important ideas that Fr. John lays forth is that each of these ideologies seeks to transform the world and the people who live in it. Nevertheless, all three ultimately fail as they are incapable of taking into account the spiritual nature of man, only dealing with the “saeculum.”
Though one does not pick up a book with a title such as this expective to go away with a sense of hope, Fr. John nevertheless is able to impart a bit of hope to his readers. In spite of the failures of the past that he documents well in this and his other volumes, the call to transformation is still there and it only requires our response to make it a reality. Not in ideological world-building, but rather in a spiritual renewal in which we are transformed by Christ.
I highly recommend this book if you have read the previous volumes in this series or if you want to gain a deeper understanding of the 20th century world and all of its competing notions of personhood and what the purpose of life really is.

Good News, Bad News
Chakos has done a fantastic job of creating an engaging, fun, and relatable read for young kids. As an Orthodox teacher, I was excited to have a simple read-aloud chapter book for my class. My first-grade students enjoyed the humor and the twists and turns in the story. Steven was a very relatable character to the kids, and they enjoyed predicting what would happen next. Overall a great read!

Reclaiming the Great Commission: A Roadmap to Parish Health
The book is thoroughly western and Protestant in its approach. I don’t understand how the editors at Ancient Faith can not see this. This book could be reduced to a 1600 word article and published in Christianity Today and be a useful guide for evangelical Christians wanting to revitalize mission outreach in their congregation.

The Whole Counsel of God: An Introduction to Your Bible
Fr. Stephen De Young jam packed this small book with so much information about the Bible. Every Christian should know the miracle of how the Bible got to us in its current form. I appreciate Fr. De Young's comments that knowing Greek doesn't ensure that you are getting the best interpretation of what the Bible says. Besides being informative and enlightening, this book is also practical. I found the chapters on "Which Bible Should I Read?" and "How Should I Read My Bible?" to be incredibly helpful in knowing how to read the Bible. This book will deepen your appreciation for the Bible. I'm sure that this is a book that you will want to read again and again.
