The Age of Nihilism: Christendom from the Great War to the Culture Wars
How did we get here? How did our society come to this?
If these are questions that you gnaw at you after reading the news, questions that keep you awake at night, Strickland's Age of Nihilism will help you sort it out. The last in his "Paradise and Utopia" quartet, this volume traces the decline of Christendom roughly from World War I to the present day. Like its predecessors, Age of Nihilism is incredibly well-researched and organized, drawing threads from politics, music, literature, art, psychology, and religion and weaving an intricate tapestry of the time. It is helpful to have read the preceding books, as the author refers repeatedly to his theme of humanity's quest for political Utopia at the expense of the paradise of Christendom, but this work can also stand alone as a big-picture, comprehensive analysis of the 20th century.

The first part of the book uses the lenses of Wagner, Nietzche, and Dostoevsky to examine the varying responses to nihilism among the cultural elites in the late 19th Century. Wagner and Nietzche promoted the concept of the transcendent 'superman', boldly transgressing all accepted mores and traditional boundaries, while Dostoyevsky mirrored the 'Godman' and repentance in his characters as a panacea to the world's moral and philosophical decline. Strickland traces the continued dehumanization of man through the Great War, which drove nihilism down through the classes; if before it had been the milieu only of elites, now it was palpable even to the lowliest private in the trenches. The rootlessness of secular ideology gave rise to Communism, Nazism, genocide and suicide, followed inevitably by the quest for liberal world building and a desire to spread and instill "The American Way." Camus, Sartre, Huxley, and even Hippiedom are fit into the puzzle, along with Neo-Paganism and the decline in mainline Christianity. Strickland wraps up with more recent history: the collapse of Communism, Postmodernism, and Fukuyama's "End of History."

As a reader, I have to admit that this book was rather depressing... but does anyone go into a survey of 20th Century Nihilism expecting a light read? Strickland's conclusion, holding up the Orthodox Faith as a beacon of hope, was heartening, but perhaps a bit too short to counteract the effect of the preceding 370 pages. My only criticism would be that I wished this section were more fleshed out, expounding on Orthodoxy's liturgical and doctrinal consistency, its role as a standard-bearer in moral issues, and its continual call to repentance. This is the ultimate answer to the problem of Nihilism, which is now the very air we breathe.

I would recommend this book (and the complete Strickland series) not only to adults but as an excellent text for homeschool high-schoolers and for anyone wishing to build an Orthodox worldview firmly rooted in history.

The Ancient Faith Prayer Book
I recently became Orthodox and this was the first prayer book I acquired. It has been a blessing for my newly developing prayer life. From the normative morning and evening prayers, prayers for other times of the day and special occasions, to prayers of saints, this little book is a wonderful guide for prayer. The physical book itself is well made and nicely formatted. Highly recommend

The Age of Nihilism: Christendom from the Great War to the Culture Wars
This book is pretty thick and packed with incredible information about the time period from the First World War until the twenty-first century. It covers well known individuals such as Nietzsche, Richard Wagner, Karl Marx, Martin Luther King Jr and many others. While at times the writing seemed a bit deep and I had to take it slowly, overall the book was really good. It really brought home the understanding that ideas and beliefs really do have long term consequences and affect others. It also gave me a better understanding about how we got to where we are today in The West. I highly recommend adding this book to your collection!

Healing Work: Giving Humanity a Second Chance
Healing Work: Giving Humanity a Second Chance offers the necessary tools to help one begin to heal themselves. The beginning of the book focuses on understanding our own life story and the areas where we could use healing. It walks the readers through different stages of life and how these stages impact our mental and emotional health. It also offers tools for doing our own healing work outside of professional therapies and help. I found this book helpful in examining my own life story and parts of it that would benefit from introspection and healing. As a mother of a child with a history of significant trauma, this book was also helpful in understanding the ways that they are experiencing trauma and suggestions for supporting them towards healing. Although I had not read Father Makoul’s first book Healing Your Wounded Soul: Growing From Pain to Peace, I found this book to be helpful as a stand alone piece for how to work through the process of healing. I’d recommend this book for anyone as we all have parts of our lives that would benefit from the healing process.

*Disclosure: This book was gifted to me in exchange for my honest opinion.
