Excellent for inquirers/catechumens
Know the Faith: A Handbook for Orthodox Christians and Inquirers
Answers most questions inquirers have coming from protestant backgrounds. As a former Baptist pastor, many of my questions were more theological in nature, and this book quenched my thirst. Don't worry, it's not too technical! Where it really shines is at the end of each chapter, where Bible passages and patristic writings reinforce the material that has been presented.

Christ in the Psalms
Christ in the Psalms, by Patrick Henry Reardon

It took me 11 months to read this book. The original plan was to read one psalm each day, then read Fr. Patrick;s two-page commentary on that psalm and then read (or pray) the psalm one more time. Ideally this book should;ve taken me 151 days, since he includes Psalm 151, which is not in most western Bibles and which ;is never read in Church; in the East. At some point during this past year I got behind, and as I neared the end of the year I doubled up my readings to get ;caught up; before 2021 ended.

Fr. Patrick Reardon comes from the perspective of having been a Roman Catholic Trappist monk at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, and eventually becoming a priest in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church. His theological training includes studies at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Kentucky), St. Anselm;s College (Rome), Pontifical Institute (Rome) and St. Tikhon;s Orthodox Seminary (Pennsylvania).

As a result of his rich background, Fr. Patrick provides a view to the Psalms with an appreciation for both the Western and Eastern Christian traditions. What is central to his treatment of each psalm is how Christ and the Church are to be interpreted. He quotes and/or mentions New Testament references, as well as how Christ himself quotes the Psalms, or refers to them in his teachings and parables in the four Gospel accounts. Additionally, Reardon mentions and/or quotes extensively from Old Testament passages which provide further insight to the context of the psalms.

The Psalms are numbered according to the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) with the Hebrew (and more common in Western Bibles) numbering in parenthesis. I believe that Reardon;s commentaries on the Psalms would be appreciated by those from all three strands of Christianity: Orthodox, Catholic or Protestant. Since he makes frequent reference to liturgical uses of the Psalms, those not familiar with ;high church; Christianity, might have to do some additional homework to appreciate these references.

I made use of ;The Psalms of David,; translated from the Septuagint Greek by Donald Sheehan, as I went through this commentary. In his introduction, Sheehan (a renowned expert on poetry) comments on the chiastic nature of of the Psalms. (The key thing for me is that the most important line(s) of each psalm are usually in the center.) This observation is entirely missing from Reardon;s book, and I would suggest the reader also become familiar with this information to further enhance the reading (and praying) of the Psalms.

Fr. Patrick Henry Reardon provides a perspective on the Psalms that had never occurred to me in my private reading. In many cases, his interpretations will require more thought and investigation. But I do believe his thoughts help me to realize there is MUCH MORE going on in the Psalms than initially meets the eye.

Interesting perspective
Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy: Finding the Way to Christ in a Complicated Religious Landscape (2017 edition)
I'm not orthodox but I thought this was a fair and even handed overview of the various branches of Christianity and their history. Probably not deep enough for an academic but for anyone with a passing interest it's perfect.

Offering a Compassionate and Challenging...
Christian Faith and Same Sex Attraction (2015 edition)
I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I'd asked for a copy because of the work that I do and the fact that I work every day with individuals who are struggling with issues of intimacy - emotional, psychological, and physical. I work with those of all gender identities and sexual orientations, and this book provided an opportunity to see a basic worldview that offers hope, consideration, and challenge to anyone who wants to reconcile their faith with the world that we live in.Father Hopko takes a very loving approach to a topic that is charged with emotion. He doesn't mince words when speaking about sexuality - and he challenges people of all orientations to remember that sexuality is only one part of being human; that our ultimate goal is communion with Christ. The approach in this small book is one of love, compassion, and concern for all people. There are many today who will be offended by what is said, and many more who will find a whole, compassionate approach and way to answer the question of what Scripture says and how Orthodox Christians should respond to non-traditional views/approaches of sexuality. As an audiobook, you will find that the chapters are short and that it is hard to pick up on the order or organization of the chapter titles - it was the one thing I wish I had to look at so that I could follow it better. That said, it is a book I will listen to again in the future, and may procure hard copies of to share with others.

Arise, O God: The Gospel of Christ’s Defeat of Demons, Sin, and Death
Love everything Father Andrew Stephen Damick does, along with Fr. Stephen DeYoung for that matter. This book brings our attention to the unseen world and its inapparent influence on our lives. Highly recommended.

A Sacred Beginning: Nurturing Your Body, Mind, and Soul during Baby's First Forty Days

Wow! This book needs to be a staple for any pregnant woman, especially Orthodox. So I just had a baby back in June and I wish I would have began reading this months before I gave birth. It explains the importance of the postpartum period and how to heal spiritually and physically. This book is written by two women who give amazing advice and tips to achieve a wonderful experience. Postpartum is hard! It’s emotional, challenging, physically demanding and utterly exhausting, but Sarah and Sasha give wonderful advice from different perspectives. Everything mentioned in the book was backed by quotes from church Fathers. This book should be on the shelf of every Orthodox mother’s shelf!

2022 Little Church Planner
It’s a wonderful idea, but needs refining. The print is very hard to read—the font is too small and too light to be useful. And the daily calendar would benefit from lines and more room for notes. For $42 this should be easier to use. Thank you!
