Fasting as a Family: Planning and Preparing Delicious Lenten Meals
Before I decided to convert to Eastern Orthodox Christianity, I read this book to see if fasting with four kids seemed doable or healthy. Fasting as a family is gift worthy and every recipe I have tried has been a hit!

Anthony, the Great
Anthony the Great has great artwork, believable and lovable characters, and an important message delivered in an accessible way for young people. My own children are the age of Anthony and his sister in this story and they were delighted by it. Anthony has some big feelings, including some big wants, that he has to process. His feelings are real and honest and hard to deal with. He chooses, even at his young age, to work through them and to try his hardest. This is a story about perseverance and mindfulness, which is very "on trend" but here we talk about it in a context where our focus is on why we are mindful, who gives us the strength to persevere, and the answer is that it comes from the grace of God. Children do not find this profound if we work though it in the context of our every day actions, and see it reflected in characters in our picture books. We look to the lives of the saints and to our patron saint for examples of how to sacrifice and love. This book is a beautiful sharing of how it can be a blessing in all of our lives to teach our young people how to work through life's difficulties and experience how the struggle changes our world when we meet it with love, kindness, and grace.

A Child's Guide to Confession
When I received A Child’s Guide to Confession, I was surprised by its small size. But this little book makes a big impact! This book is divided into sections; “What is confession?”, “Preparing for confession”, “Self-Examination”, “A Selection of Prayers”, “A Prayer After Confession”, “Note to Parents”, and lastly a glossary. The construction of the book seems to be good, with thick pages and covers.
After scanning through it briefly, I read it to my children 8 and 9 years old, respectively. Both found the illustrations engaging and not too childish. The text is clear and concise. After reading this, both children, already knowing what confession is, found this book to be an excellent reference they can return to for self reflection and committing prayers to memory. Other children’s books on the mystery of confession have often led to more questions from my children. This book offered them more answers, giving examples in the “Self Examination” section, such as “Have I been impatient?” “Have I ignored someone who needed help?”.
The glossary is a wonderful feature. As children get older and gain more independence, they can look up words on their own and apply them as needed. This book will easily fit into a purse or any bag and is being shuffled from each of my children’s nightstands as they need or want to read it.
As a parent, I appreciate that this is a resource my children will return to time after time to remind them of not only the “process’ of confession, but the impact of the spiritual relationship they are cultivating with God. The wisdom found in the parent section is a beautiful reminder to allow your children to develop their spirituality with your help and assistance. We, as parents, are encouraged not to be “helicopter parents” and micromanaging our children’s confessions. Another copy is in our future. A Child’s Guide to Confession is a treasure for any family.

Everywhere Present: Christianity in a One-Storey Universe
I love the simplistic nature of this book. As I've learned, some books are meant to be read, others studied. Father Freeman's book is of the latter. It holds many lessons that equate to our time in life. Make sure you have your highlighter and take your time. While it is a short book, it is long in life lessons.

The Ancient Faith Prayer Book, deluxe edition
The binding is classy and sturdy for long term/continuous use.
The prayers have a depth to them that has enhanced my prayer life and directed my spiritual growth in, what I consider to be, in line with what our God and our Lord have asked of us.

Raising Them Right: A Saint’s Advice on Raising Children
I received an Audible credit from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Raising Them Right: A Saint’s Advice on Raising Children” is a short but incredibly powerful volume that I heartily recommend for parents of children of all ages. Saint Theophan the Recluse is known for his many wonderful texts on the Christian life.
I have to admit that it took a little while to get used to the narrator’s voice and style. Kristina Wenger has a nice, soft voice that for whatever reason didn’t seem to fit with the style and tone of this book at first. However, it proved not to be a problem for me; by the end of the book, I was quite satisfied with her narration.
This volume opens with a brief life of St. Theophan. I found this helpful, though I was already familiar with his biography, as it certainly provides much-needed context for the advice he gives to parents. Following the biography, the chapters that follow are arranged chronologically according to a child’s life—from infancy to young adulthood. I especially like that this is an audio book as the later chapters—dealing with older children and teenagers—are easy enough for them to understand. This provides an opportunity for parents and children to listen together and to discuss what the saint said and how they can apply it to their own lives.
A great deal of the advice given is straightforward and seems to be easy to implement—creating a prayer rule, including children in the life of the Church. However, I found others to be more challenging given our day and age. St. Theophan recommends that children, speaking of teenagers, should always ask their parents’ permission before doing anything, as his or her parents know what is best for them. In Western culture, it has become common to give teenagers and even younger children a great deal of latitude and freedom when it comes to decision-making. We tend to expect children as they get older to require less input from their parents. Perhaps, the saint’s wisdom is a correction for our age and a well-needed one at that.
As a father of an infant daughter, I look forward to implementing the saint’s advice, but I will be sure to do so under the direction of my spiritual father. I recommend that other readers do the same, lest we fall into pride thinking we understand what is best on our own.
At less than 2 hours in length, this is a very short work that you may wish was longer. I enjoyed the short length as it makes it easier to go back and listen to again and again, especially when your child approaches or is a certain age St. Theophan addresses.

Time and Despondency: Regaining the Present in Faith and Life
Well written and easy to read - lots of research went into this book - logic is explained and supported by real life examples. Offers a number of actions and responses for the reader to improve their life. As I was familiar with the podcast information, some of the book served to reinforce ideas. I am planning to re-read the book after I try to implement some of the advice... the book offers a lot to think about and consider

What Do You Hear, Angel? (paperback version)
Realistic, painterly illustrations fully engage with wonder and awe. While the repetitious text takes a few reads to get the hang of, it does teach a beautiful mystical reality that a child can grow into. I've ordered this now for 2 grandchildren who love it; it's a gentle way to introduce little ones to their guardian angels.

A Child's Guide to Confession
I love this little book and plan to buy one for each of my children. It is a beautifully illustrated and formatted guide to the sacrament of confession for children. My favorite part of it is how the self-examination section follows the verses of I Corinthians 13, helping to focus us on how sin is really failing to love. It's a section I will use for my self as well.
I gave it my nine year old son to review, and here is what he said:
"I think "A Child's Guide to Confession" is a very good book. It has stuff that is related to me. This book would be a good thing to take to confession with you. It tells you what confession is and how to prepare for confession. I liked a part called self examination, which can help you tell your priest whatever you want to tell him. It also has a selection of prayers to say before confession and things to pray after confession. I am glad it's a available. Thank you!"

Anthony, the Great
This is such a cute book! It’s about a 4 year old boy named Anthony (and his dinosaur Mikey!) He decides to try and be more like his patron saint who struggled with temptations and loved God more than anything else. At first, he thinks it’s easy, but he finds as the day goes on he has more temptations, like not yelling when asked to clean his room, or not being selfish, etc. I love the message of the book, and my four and two year old girls really enjoyed it! I also enjoyed the fun and entertaining illustrations (they made me laugh!), and I liked how some of the text was in different sized fonts and different colors. I think this helps to emphasize points, and keeps it fun! The only thing I wasn’t too keen on was the fact that Brussels sprouts are villainized. I personally enjoy eating them (haha!) and I believe in not giving kids negative ideas about foods and other things. But that is a minor detail compared to the overall message of the book. I think I’m adding this to my Christmas list for my nephews this year!
