Chronicles of History and Worship: Orthodox Christian Reflections on the Books of Chronicles
There are few authors around who dare to address the apparently dull books of Chronicles but Fr Patrick (an Antiochian Orthodox priest) does so in a manner which opens a door for further personal meditation while not burdening the reader with grandiose insights. The chapters are neatly broken down to correspond easily with chapters in the Scriptures themselves so the reader can easily read them together. As they are also short, it is possible to use this book for light reading or lunch time meditation without having to worry about whether it will be possible to finish the chapter.

Parenting Toward the Kingdom: Orthodox Christian Principles of Child-Rearing
Like the'Shepherding a Child's Heart', this book focuses us as parents on the long term goals of parenting. And the author is immersed in the greats of the Orthodox teachers on childrearing: Mother Magdalena of Essex, St. Paisius of Mt. Athos, St. Theophan the Recluse. Mamalakis is a both-and teacher - we need to connect emotionally with our children, coming alongside them, so they can learn to struggle. And this includes setting and maintaining clear boundaries for behavior. I was at a low point in parenting, perhaps looking at my feet in the mud in a valley; Mamalakis brought my gaze back up to the mountain top, and helped me take the first steps along its path. We have sold out at our parish - I will give these as baby shower gifts for years to come! (not Andrew, but his wife)

A Faith Encouraged: A Devotional Guide to Being Orthodox on Purpose
This devotional should be a best seller to Christians everywhere. Father Barnabas has given us ammunition aplenty to overcome the negatives of the evil one throughout the year. It is now an integral part of my wife Sandy and I's daily devotions. May God bless this book and use it for the glory of the Holy Trinity, we pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages..Amen

Good translation. Clear English. Well Organized. I would like a little more detail, the names of the saints who wrote the various prayers would be nice.

These daily devotionals are an important part of my mornings. Father Barnabas' style is very refreshing, Biblically-based, and quite engaging. This book is a great companion to prayer, reading of the Bible, and other spiritual disciplines for an Orthodox Christian or anyone with interest in the Orthodox faith.

Fr Barnabas Powell is excellent in covaying the message of the Christian faith by being Orthodox on purpose. Daily scripture readings are read and conveyed in a manner that relates to us all. The readings are not long but well delivered and thought provoking.

I like this book. A lot. I'll finish the last chapter this morning. My big take away is that this book showed me why I hate Religion. I know the word comes from religio which means connection and that is cool. But religious people turn me off; sounds self righteous and it is. But here's the point that Fr. Freeman brings home. ALL is religious stuff; we are talking about a God who walks and talks "in all places and fills all things". The picture he gives is what happens to us when we make God stay where He belongs; the Man Upstairs. How we keep Him separated and in his religious corner. This book reminded me why I'm Orthodox., why I converted from Protestant Evangelicalism decades back.
Are you are "a doorman/doorwoman for God" who doesn't quite fit in? One who dresses funny, stays out in the cold at the curb? One who helps people into the church? Helps those who bolt out of the church to go back in and take a second look before giving up? One who sees God as much inside as outside church? Then you'll like this book.

This book is a very good overview for anyone interested in the symbolic / sacred aspects of what one experiences at an Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy. It also gives historical background on the practices and insight as to the development of the Liturgy in it's current form. As a history buff, and a recent convert from Roman Catholicism, I plan to keep referring to this book in the future as I continue to dig deeper into this wonderful and ancient religion.
