Thought provoking and interesting read
In the Eyes of Your Creator: Truly Valuing Yourself and Others
The author uses his background as a clinical psychologist and an orthodox priest to shed new light on the concept of self worth- a worth not based on self effort, but a worth based on experiencing God's love and understanding one's value through His eyes. Further chapters explore practical ways to love and value others in the same way- spouse, children, fellow Christian believers (the church) and everyone else.

A Valuable Lesson
In the Eyes of Your Creator: Truly Valuing Yourself and Others
A wise monk once said that virtually every failure in our lives can be traced to one of two reasons: we forget who God is; or we forget who we are. In his excellent book, Dr. Fontes helps us to think clearly about our Creator, and about how valuable we are as His handiwork. As opposed to secular attempts to boost self-esteem, which leave God out of the picture, In the Eyes of Your Creator reminds us that our self-worth comes from being created in the image of God. Understanding this truth will also enable us to better love our neighbors as ourselves.

Rock and Sand: An Orthodox Appraisal of the Protestant Reformers and Their Theology
This is an eye-opening and informative look at the people and events surrounding the Protestant Reformation. The book is well-laid-out, easy to read, and extensively footnoted (with additional information in the footnotes).
My only criticism is that I found the tone a little harsh, despite the fact that the author included a section explicitly praising the reformers in areas where they agree with Orthodox doctrine.
As a former Protestant, I appreciate the frank evaluation of the Reformation, but I probably won't be lending this to my Protestant friends.

An Excellent Book of Meditations
The Morning Offering
This was the best devotional book I've read in a long time. Abbot Tryphon's book of daily meditations covers a full year of his thoughts on scripture, orthodoxy, community and the challenges of developing spirituality in a secular world. The book offers inspirations and points for examining ones own faith and spirituality. Abbot Tryphon's scholarship is evident in his avoidance of supermarket religion, while he writes with such a humble style that the believer is encouraged to read and question our own beliefs, examining why we think as we do. He gives us room to grow through the year. The Morning Offering has a secular value in Abbot Tryphon's explanation of his church's beliefs and practices, and why they do as they do. Much of Eastern Europe is Orthodox and to understand much of the political scene in Russia and among her neighbors, it helps to understand the official religion of the country. Abbot Tryphon offers a very readable, non-judgmental explanation of the Russian Orthodox faith.

Very interesting experiences in a convent in Greece. I liked the way the author writes and her attitude of humility. Can recommend this for those interested in the orthodox way.

Christ in the Psalms
Brilliant book. So very helpful in coming to understand the Psalms on a deeper level. I don't try to read too much at a time. One or two Psalm discussions per day.

I found it easy to apply each step to myself
Thirty Steps to Heaven: The Ladder of Divine Ascent for All Walks of Life
I found it easy to apply each step to myself and my life. Through the Grace of Holy Tradition, we have been passed down the riches and wisdom of the Apostles and the Church Fathers, one of these being the book, "The Ladder of Divine Ascent." As an early convert to Orthodoxy, I did read it, an incredible and life changing book but of course written originally for monastics and with that, I knew as much as the ultimate goal was the same, there were certain parts and practices, that were not applicable to the average person. Fr Vassilios' book is a fresh and enlightening commentary of St. John Climacus' book but instead simplifies the understanding of each virtue but at no point, does he take away from or detract from the significance of each. With less energy needed to understand, I found it easy to apply each step to myself and my life...of course fighting the prideful thoughts that I possibly had achieved a certain level, only to be humbled and at times become emotional, at how far I still had to go. I stopped myself from reading more than a chapter or two at a time, although tempting, but instead giving myself the time to contemplate what I had read and apply it. Amazing how I was tempted or tested daily with what I had read previously and found it hard to forget the simple but inspired words, I had previously read and attempt to apply them. Some books are so simple but yet hold such Spiritual Wisdom and Inspiration and I believe in the 'simplicity' of this book, along with Fr Vassilios' own heart, experience and current examples, make it one that anyone of almost every age and background will relate to and be able to return to again and again. I believe this quote from the book and the Bible verse quoted along with it, not only describes our journey to become like Christ, but in a way describes how through the 'simplicity' of this book, it is able to assist us along that very path.
"Theosis, or dispassion, cannot be acquired with the intellect, but only by experience, meaning by synergy. We cannot be saved by faith alone, by grace alone, or by works alone. This principal lies at the heart of Orthodox mysticism." Fr Vassilios Papavassiliou
"The dispassionate man no longer lives himself, but it is Christ who lives in him." Galatians 2 vs 20.
