As soon as I'd opened the package on this one, my 2-year-old daughter got ahold of it. She opened and closed it about a hundred times, tugged on the hinge, and got her fingers and finger nails all over the images. I was worried that the images might scrape off, or the hinge might break. They didn't.
This is a high-quality item, perfect for travel, or use somewhere that it can't be left out.

This is a GREAT little prayer book! It is especially helpful for us beginners who are just starting out in the way of Orthodoxy. Simple to use and understand, I highly recommend this prayer book. It is also just the right size to fit in your purse or briefcase. :)

I have not read the original Ladder of Divine Ascent but this is a great survey and introduction to it, should I decide to read it. As I find with most Orthodox teaching, the virtues and passions are presented very matter of factly, very concisely, and very accessibly. It's all so simple and straightforward, but not necessarily easy, to seek to live out these principles, but we are all in the trenches, struggling together to live this life that we intrinsically know is to our benefit to emulate and put into practice so far as we are able. Everything takes practice, and as you persevere, you grow stronger and your light shines a little brighter to others, even as we struggle not to let that go to our heads either!

Nearly Orthodox: On being a modern woman in an ancient traditionby Angela Doll CarlsonI loved the writing in this book! Especially the last couple paragraphs of each chapter. The poetic flow and the slight repetition of certain phrases really tickled my literary senses. (which is rare for me since I usually read more for the story then the writing and don't really pay too close attention to the writing style).I loved the humorous buts too. One particular line that made me chuckle was when Angela is describing the rambunctiousness of her sons and how they can't help it because the testosterone makes them do it. Yes I have 3 boys and could totally relate!I didn't know too much about being Orthodox and still don't know a lot about it. The book is not a teaching tool into becoming Orthodox (I don't think) it is the story of one womans journey within herself in becoming as she puts it "nearly orthodox" since she says she never really gets there it is always a becoming and a road being travelled.I received this book from the author for my honest review.
