H Is for Holy: An Orthodox Christian Alphabet
In recent years, we have seen the growth in publication of Orthodox Christian literature for children and Nika Boyd’s, “H is for Holy: An Orthodox Christian Alphabet”, is a wonderful, new edition to this budding genre from Ancient Faith Publishing, 2015. With iconographically sensitive and lively illustration by Heather Hayward, the book offers a liturgical and theological exploration of the Orthodox Church for children. Moving boldly beyond an association of a single letter to a single word, Ms. Boyd incorporates descriptive text illuminating both concrete and spiritual aspects of church life with sensitivity and depth. With imagery so important in prayer and worship, the concise and age appropriate descriptions are perfectly mirrored in the illustrations for each letter. An added bonus are the inclusion of simple questions following many of the descriptions, encouraging the reader to think beyond the actual text to make connections to their own experience and understanding of their life in the church. This book would be a beautiful and meaningful addition to any child’s library.

Prayer Bracelet, 33 knots with silver-tone cross
It's hard to tell from the photos, but this bracelet is much thicker than the others on this site. Each knot is about 3/8 thick, and the overall circumference is larger too, making it a good choice for a man.

H Is for Holy: An Orthodox Christian Alphabet
Most of us are familiar with alphabet books, introducing children to their ABCs. A is for apple. Isn't that the way most of them start? A letter, a picture, a word. Simple and direct. Learning the alphabet is an important stepping stone for young children. It is foundational for reading and writing skills. But foundational or not, if we are honest, most alphabet books don't give much food for thought. They have one purpose, and once the child has learned the alphabet, they are often set aside and forgotten.

This alphabet book is different.

H is for Holy: An Orthodox Christian Alphabet not only familiarizes young children with the alphabet, but uses the letters to teach and reinforce words, concepts, and events that are basic to the Orthodox faith. The illustrations are large, colorful, and engaging (and children are sure to take notice of the cute little Corgi who makes several appearances), but what is most impressive about this book is how the author gives the children more to consider than just a letter and a word. For example, the letter J is for Jesus, but the text also explains that Jesus is the Son of God and both human AND God! and then invites the child to share stories about Jesus- in four simple sentences.

H is for Holy is not the typical alphabet board book that you might find at the thrift store. It is a tool for Orthodox parents and educators to introduce the alphabet, and more importantly, a springboard for discussing our faith with our little ones at their level. Printed in a just right 8 x 10 hardcover format that lends itself to reading aloud, yet isn't cumbersome, H is for Holy is a treasure that can be shared with children and passed on to grandchildren and godchildren.

Beautiful book from an inspiring artist
The Mystery of Art: Becoming an Artist in the Image of God
About halfway through this book, Jackson writes about an acting role he once had that led a lot of people to write to him about how much the story meant to them. Of that story, he says he believes, "their hearts were drawn to the beauty of healing, compassion, purity, redemption, and love - they were drawn to Christ." I have been drawn to Jonathan Jackson's work for about five years now, reading three of his books, listening to his songs with his band Enation, and seeing his band perform live several times. And I think it's exactly what he mentioned in that quote that has drawn me in ' the themes of healing, compassion, redemption, love, and rebellion are abundant in his work as an artist and in this book. Some of Jackson's religious references and the scripture in this book were over my head, but he writes from a place of love and openness that is refreshing and honest. I felt no judgment for not sharing his exact beliefs, rather, I found a lot of common ground and inspiration in his writing. He touches on beauty and love and freedom, and he comes from it from a place of emotional honesty. There are so many valuable messages that will stick with me, like living in the moment, embracing joy, eschewing materialism and fame. And if you are a fan of his work as an actor and musician like I am, there are a lot of great little stories about many of his projects and songs sprinkled throughout the book as an added bonus. You can really tell he took his time with the book and put his heart in it.Another favorite quote of mine from this book is, "The artist has been given the charge to assist in awakening the true hunger inside each soul." Jonathan Jackson's work has done that for me, and I hope we hear a lot more from him over the coming years.

Welcome to the Orthodox Church: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity (Mathewes-Green)
This is a comprehensive, but accessible, introduction to the Orthodox Church. I love the way the author weaves the theology of the Church into the descriptions of the practices of the church.
When I invited my (Protestant) parents to a couple of services, they were a little overwhelmed and bewildered. I had trouble answering their questions, because each of the answered depended on explaining things that brought up more questions. I think this book will help. I might need to go through it again and mark up places where our parish customs differ. For example, we don't have a swinging chandelier (which sounds pretty cool!) and I've yet to run into any converts who use their obscure baptismal name in everyday life. (No, Mom, I don't have to change my name to join this Church.)

A humble, and humbling, book
Christian Faith and Same Sex Attraction (2015 edition)
Fr. Tom throughout the book keeps the immediate topic firmly in the context of Orthodox Christian anthropology and Orthodox Christian quotidian spiritual struggle. He lays out a pathway for those experiencing same-sex attraction, but demonstrates that in essence that path is the path for every Christian in this fallen world.

Orthodoxy and Catholicism: What are the Differences?
To a Protestant, the trappings of Orthodox worship can look very Roman Catholic. This short booklet clearly and concisely explains the fundamental differences in the outward similarities.
I'd recommend it to anyone trying to explain to Protestant friends and family (especially ex-Catholic friends and family) how the Orthodox church is not the same as the Roman Catholic church. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for your currently Catholic friends and family, since it is written by an Orthodox priest who converted from Roman Catholicism, and he presents the flaws he found in RC theology and practice.
