The Essentials: An Orthodox Christian Catechism
On a whim, I picked a copy of "The Essentials: An Orthodox Christian Catechism" by Archpriest Pavel Soucek. Short, succinct, and an easy read. Overall impressed with this book. A must have for any Orthodox Christian or someone interested in Orthodoxy

The Island and Saint Aidan
"The Island and St Aidan" is so beautifully written that I couldn't put it down. It almost felt like poetry the way it painted the story of St. Aidan arriving on Lindisfarne. With every chapter told from the perspective of a different character, I couldn't wait to find out more about this Saint.
This is definitely one that I will be giving as a Christmas gift to our 12 year old son; but also one that I will be recommending to my nieces and nephew, the church bookstore, and to the other parents in our parish.

The Island and Saint Aidan
Brandi Willis Schreiber’s new children’s book, The Island and St. Aidan, combines her supremely lyrical prose with a unique approach to telling a story about a saint. Instead of beginning with St. Aidan himself, she first introduces us to the personified tidal island of Lindisfarne, then to the various plants and animals that live there and to the sea that surrounds them, each of which knows its own purpose as it was created by God. At last St. Aidan appears and interacts with each character, granting it loving attention and respect and reaffirming its purpose.
This book is not so much a story as a picture in words and evoked sensations that transports the reader to a beautiful place in a simpler time. We can smell the salt air, feel the cold wind, touch the rough grasses, pet the curious bunny. Most of all, we can sense God’s presence in all of them and learn to share in St. Aidan’s deep love for every single creature God made.
The Island and St. Aidan will enthrall children and parents alike and plant in them a longing to experience the world as St. Aidan did—in solitude, simplicity, and love.

The Orthodox Study Bible, Ancient Faith Edition, Leathersoft: Ancient Christianity Speaks to Today’s World
My whole life I’ve used the standard Protestant 66 canon bible and it wasn’t till recently that I started reading about the early church and the church fathers opinions on the deuterocanonical books of the Bible. I’ve loved reading reading from a bible that comes from the LXX and Greek Gospels.

The Kingdom of God and the Common Good: Orthodox Christian Social Thought
To start off I did enjoy this book and I felt that it gave a good overview of the history of economics and economics in church history. Dylan Pahman is very knowledgeable about that subject and covers a lot of ground so I certainly wouldn’t discourage anyone from buying this book. This all being said the reason why my review is not higher is mainly due to the fact that that in the later towards the end of the book in section 5 (although you can probably find examples earlier as well) Dylan’s breakdown of Church statements and what specific policies the church should cover in future statements is based less so on what the Churches actual polcy towards these subjects historically is and more based on what Dylan personally believes to be correct which I’m not sure really lines up with reality. That being said I certainly would still recommend this book because it’s still a good overview of a lot of important concepts but it suffers from being a bit narrow on certain subjects based on the perspective of the author. Now it’s fine to have the perspective he does, an argument certainly can be made for very limited government interference into society and the economy, (in most cases I agree it shouldn’t interfere) but I simply don’t believe his reading of history is entirely accurate. In the end despite my disagreement I would stillj recommend this book. It’s a useful tool for someone who want to get a basic view of the progression of economic theory and how it plays into church history, it should just be kept in mind that it comes from a certain perspective on the material. Iron sharpens iron and it’s good to hear different perspectives because it allows us to stop and think about our own views for in depth and maybe gain a little nuance and so for that I appreciate “The Kingdom of God and The Common Good.”
