Luna Wolf V2 (Limited Release)
Very easy install, I watched a few of the videos first and then just started to assemble. I had a Sondors before and although it was great it just can’t compare to a 1600w mid drive.

Installed luna battery on izip bike. Easy installation but required some modification. Added extra voltage display since stock one was not compatible. Battery is great and much cheaper than a stock one.

Luna Space Blanket Bike Cover
So far I have only good things to say about Luna. I want to ride my bike with the 30T Mighty Mini everyday but Monsoon Season brought monster heat and rain. Luna's cover keep my bike cool and dry while I sat in the pub. Problem solved. Thanks Luna!

Luna Eclipse ChainRing for the BBSHD
Should have ordered the spacer kit along with original order. After some tweaking this kit really works well. The chainwheel really made a huge difference. Good quality product! Thanks Luna!

Luna Cycles opened a door to freedom through reliable electric bikes, motors and batteries. Ebikes changed my life. I’m spending time in the real world and not glued to the TV. Everyone should experience the Ebike adventure.

Bafang BBSHD Mid Drive Ebike Kit
Goal: Build a bike for my daughter, who is going into High School, to commute on without spending the $3,500 it costs to buy a manufactured e-bike.

Result: After scouting out e-bike options and realizing that getting a high performing bike would cost significant amounts of money, I started looking into e-bike kits. Since several e-bike reviewer referenced Luna, finding them was pretty easy. This began my plan to convert my 8yr old Motobecane Phantom Pro 29er. The BBSHD seemed to be perfect because I could customize it to keep the kids at a sane level of speed, while retaining the privilege of changing the settings to accommodate my own level of bike handling skills commiserate with years of racing road bikes. Total cost from Luna was $1500 shipped. Other costs were $100 (rack and tires). Goal achieved while saving about $2,000 and getting a much higher performing bike.

To ensure I had all the options of the factory bikes, I purchased the BBSHD, upgraded Luna DPC-18 color display, shift sensor, hydraulic brake sensors, and 52v Panasonic 13.5ah Shark Pack with smart charger.

Installation took a little under two hours, but I have been cycling since 2005 and have done all the maintenance on my bikes. Because I purchased the Luna wrench, the bottom bracket installation was a breeze. Because the cranks on the BBSHD are square taper, I would recommend getting the crank-arm puller tool if you get this kit (Park Tool Crank Puller, Park Ccp-22, Square).

Fit on Bike – With the stock chainring, this kit fit like a glove with only 2cm clearance from the chainstay; the chainline is perfect. There is no need for any of the spacers on the BB. Seriously, I do not think there could have been a better fit.

Break Sensors – I have hydraulic brakes which I would recommend for any e-bike build. They handle way better with the extra weight of the bike. The sensor magnets are supposed to be put on with epoxy. I did not trust this and feared one would fall off, thus leaving me with no motor, stranded on the side of the road. I noticed that there was a hole in the middle of the magnet that was perfect for a rivet. After drilling a hole in my Avid Elixer 3 lever, the magnet riveted on perfectly and the sensor was held on with a zip tie so that it can still be adjusted.

Shift Sensor – Once again, the frame seemed custom made for this kit. There was two eyelets for cable housing right at the top of the triangle which was perfect for the sensor placement.

Tires – Off came the nubbies and on when the WTB 29 Slick 2.2s. This gives the bike a smooth ride on the pavement and conserves energy. I put 2oz of Stans No Tubes sealant in each tube to ensure no flats.

Rack – I threw on basic Dirza Rear Bike rack that only cost $27 on Amazon. This works great for luggage as well as protecting from road debris flung up the tires.

Of course I am going to make sure everything is running well so I took it on my 24.5 mile commute to work. With a block headwind and a power of 350w assist, and 800ft of climbing, I was able to make it to work with 50.3v remaining on the battery. On the return, I cranked up the power to 500w and there was 1,300ft climbing. This time I ended up with only 43.0v remaining which is pretty close to the 41v cutoff. I could have taken it much slower, but then again, my average speed was 22mph with a heavy bag on the back. The 52v battery certainly is the best option for retaining flexibility on what can be done with the bike.

I also wanted to make sure it could get up any climb, so I took it to the highest point of San Diego North County (Double Peak) which features a 2 mile climb and 17 percent grade at the end. It easily handled the climb with only 2v drop in battery power. Since it will not be experiencing any more extreme climbing, I think this bike has all the power I need.

I have four kids, so I think I will continue to expand the electric bike fleet in my house as my kids enter high school. Maybe I will keep the BBSHD for myself and get the kids a BBS02. Since I see my car as transportation of last resort, finding these e-bike kits has opened up the range of my cycling options.

BBSHD: MOTOR 68MM
For anyone interested, here is a review of my purchasing experience with Luna Cycle. On January 29th, I placed my web order for a “ready to ship” “Lone Wolf Roam”. In addition, I ordered the “Ludicrous” upgrade, a headlight, upgraded tail light, kickstand, Cirrus Bodyfloat Kinekt seat post, and gear sensor. The bike was shipped seven days later, and I received it in good condition six days after that.

While the shipping charge of $150 seemed kind of high at the time, looking back on it, I can say it was a fair value. Fedex did a great job arranging for the delivery, calling the day before to confirm everything. For Luna’s part, their method of making sure the freight company took extra care with the shipment went well beyond the usual “handle with care” stickers, and was shear genius. You’ll see what I mean when you get yours. In addition, the bike came with a nifty, high quality bicycle cover that I was not expecting. Bottom line, the bike made it to Texas in good condition.

Assembly was a breeze. I just had to adjust the seat height, straighten the handlebars and put on the pedals. I was impressed with the attention to detail in the bike’s construction. The wires were neatly routed and well tied down. The connectors were professionally soldered and finished, and the accessories I ordered were already attached. In no time I was on the road. The bike worked perfectly with very impressive performance.

No company is perfect, and there were a couple of misses, which I’ll point out. Packaged with the bike was this weird Luna girlie pin-up calendar, which someone thought was a good idea to produce. I thought it seemed out of place and in extremely poor taste. I’m not sure what kind of image Luna is trying to create for itself, but it went straight in the garbage.

The online ordering process was pretty simple, but a couple of days after placing my order, I came upon a couple of items on the site that I hadn’t seen before. I wrote asking if these things could be added to my order. The response was that, no, they can’t. I would have to cancel my order, place a new one, and go to the back of the line on my build. Not a huge deal, but it seems odd that such a request couldn’t somehow be accommodated.

Luna is pretty clear in expressing that their bikes are meant for someone who isn’t afraid to work on their own bike, or doesn’t mind having to retain a local bike shop to deal with any issues. In fact, to get you started, they include a nifty tool kit and are quick to refer you to their online help forum. It has to be that way, really. When you buy a bicycle online you can’t expect them to show up at your door to take care of every little problem. What I wish for however is a bit more proactive attitude in dealing with the inevitable problem. Here are a couple of examples.

While assembling the bike, I found that the bolt holding the seat post was slightly stripped out. The wrench fit loosely, and it’s only a matter of time before it rounds out completely. I mentioned this to customer service, even including a photo and video of the problem. I expected Luna to ship me a replacement, but instead I was told to go to the hardware store and buy myself a new one. It’s not a huge deal, and not worth getting upset over, but Luna missed an opportunity to be awesome.

Several days later, after about sixty miles, the bike’s Gear Sensor began to act up. Customer service told me that there was probably mud and debris fouling the sensor and that I should open it up and clean it. Well, it wasn’t dirty. I’d only put sixty miles on dry pavement, and it turns out the thing is sealed and can’t be opened. A couple more back and forth emails directed me to a YouTube video on re-installation. It turns out that this gear sensor is a known headache, and though I had ask for a replacement, or a refund, along with a new shift cable to put things back to original, I never got any assurance that this would happen. As for now, I’ve managed to get the sensor working again, but I’m hoping that Luna will stand behind this if it acts up again.

I wish that Luna provided some degree of telephone support. It would have been most helpful to be able to pick up the phone and talk to a human. Obviously there are costs involved in doing this, but not being able to do so creates a customer service barrier. My back-and-forth emails over the Gear Sensor issue involved at least a half dozen exchanges over the period of a couple of weeks. Not very productive.

So, in conclusion, overall I’m happy with my purchase. The bike is awesome, and a terrific value. My overall impression of Luna is an honest, scrappy, slightly eclectic company trying to do good work in the e-bike industry. I would buy another bike from them myself, and recommend them to my friends. It would be great if they could step up their customer service to the level of the products they produce.

Fourth Anniversary BBSHD Mid Drive Kit Special
The install went great. Truly plug and play in every regard. One small part was missing and Luna sent it right away. Had a Radwagon that wouldn’t climb a half mile hill leading home to this setup that doesn’t hesitate a bit. No comparison between the two.

Everything I needed was in the kit, making it super simple for a relative novice like me. No instructions included, but not really needed. The Luna build videos could use some improvement but it's self-explanatory for the most part. Bike rides sooooo smooth and oozes with the full POWER of the BBSHD!

I gave Luna 5 Stars . Their Kits/parts and service are top of the line . I can't say enough good things about their store .However they send their products out through FedEx ,which means its guaranteed late almost every time . You will pay for the faster postage but it always comes in late . It just might be the area I live in and sometimes the package is damaged . Then to return stuff to Luna is a hassle .I'd give Luna 10 stars if they used UPS but only 5 since they us FedEx .

CHARGERS: LUNA ADVANCED - 52V
For the last two years I've been using the stock charger and letting my battery charge to 100%. Now I have the advanced charger and charging to 80% which I'm told will help extend my battery pack's lifespan. I like the the switches for slow and fast charging and 80,90,100% charge. Here's to a longer lifespan for my battery!

For Ebike items from BBS02 and BBSHD kits to MightyMini and Wolf batteries, to tools and assorted miscellaneous parts, Luna is my first choice as a go-to vendor.
There's never a worry that you're paying for something you'll never receive, and you know the support will be there, if you need it.

48v Panasonic 13.5ah Shark Pack
This is my second Luna BBS02 on a Motobecane Jubilee 8 internal gear rear hub, seat with shock and hydraulic brakes, very adjustable neck and handlebars. My Dolphin 48V 14A would not fit this 16" frame. Fortunately Luna had a reduced size 48V 13.5A shark! Love the mini display!

CHAINRING: BBS02 MINI 30T - GUNMETAL
Really enjoyed putting the kit together and now using the bike as a daily commuter. I live in a wet climate so I moved as much of the components into water resistant cases. The display and connections are all in a waterproof cell phone case and the mighty mini is in the luna bag which I may upgrade to a more waterproof case later on. The wiring has been shrink wrapped with as many connections as possible in water resistant cases. Planning on riding on mostly dry days, but I didn't want to get caught out in a storm.

The whole install took me 5 or 6 hours, most of the issues were with the bike and not the kit such as the bottom bracket needed a sanding in order to fit the BBS02 motor. I did have to redo the wiring for the battery due to my chosen location, this was easy enough.

I did not hot rod my kit further, PAS 2 is more than enough to keep me going at 30-40km/hr. The bike is light and very responsive. The Luna Mighty Mini works well for my 18km round trip, I have been riding in the cold (-1 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon) without issue.

Initially I decided to keep my old, poorly maintained, chain contrary to good sense. Bad idea as the chain lasted about 20kms before breaking. The motor puts a lot of torque on the chain and I would highly recommend buying a higher quality e-bike rated chain such as one from KMS. I now carry a spare chain as well.

My only complaint is that the Luna Mini battery charger fan is not well seated and very noisy, It sounds like a cement mixer. Not a huge deal as I charge the battery in the garage.

I may upgrade to a 3-speed IGH as I only use 2-3 gears on my old 9-speed derailleur as the cassette is pretty worn out from years of riding prior to the luna build. I added the Luna mini chainring and it works very well and looks great.

The BBSHD mid drive kit is a great product which is not only durable, but easy to apply to an existing bike with very little effort. It turned my commuter bike into a wonderful electric assisted vehicle with great range and a powerful throttle in case i need to zip forward in a hurry! Love this thing!
