After reading through as many of the online guides and forums as I could, I took the plunge and bought a used Salsa Caballero mountain bike (Craigslist) to use as a donor. It was in good enough shape for me and cost $350. I wanted a full suspension bike because the trail I ride to work can be bumpy, and I expected to be going pretty fast with my new setup. I took the bike to my LBS and had them remove the bottom bracket; it took them about 5 minutes, and they charged me $10.

I ordered the BBS02 kit from Luna Cycle and added a 48V 13.5Ah Shark battery pack. I opted for the 48T chain ring, upgraded to the DPC-18 display, standard thumb throttle, standard Bafang handles with built-in Ebrake cutoff, added the optional gear sensor and the basic battery charger. Total cost was $1040 + $65 shipping. After doing some measurements on my bike frame (before the package arrived), I realized I would need some spacers to keep the chainring from hitting my frame. It was too late to modify my existing order, so I placed another order for the spacer kit ($10) and added in front ($20) and rear ($10) rechargeable LED lights (plus $10 more shipping).

I started the installation process with the battery mount, disassembling it and drilling a hole so I could mount the metal part of the bracket to my downtube (following a YouTube tutorial from Luna Cycle). The battery and BBS02 came with matching Anderson plugs, so I didn't have to do any electrical work on either side.

I only used the thickest (4mm) spacer that came with my kit when mounting the BBS02. After adding the spacer, I had a hard time getting the short M6 bolt to catch the threads. I couldn't use the (included) longer M6 bolt on one side of the BBS02, because the threaded hole doesn't go all the way through, and the bolt was too long. Anyway, I eventually got it to screw in. Without the Luna wrench, I used a hammer and chisel to gently tighten the inner lockring. I had enough threads to use the outer lockring just fine, even with the spacers on the other side. It started coming loose after a day or two of riding, but I applied some blue loctite and tightened it back up, and it has been fine ever since.

Wiring everything else was pretty straightforward. I only hooked up the front brake with the built-in cutoffs. My rear brake and shifter are inseparable, and I didn't want to hassle with replacing the shifter entirely. My rear shifter cable was pretty frayed, but I tried to force it through the gearsensor accessory anyway. That was a bad idea. In the end, I took the bike back to the LBS and had them replace my cable and thread it through the gearsensor in the process. That cost $20.

The rest of the installation process was just a matter of plugging in cables and adding zip ties where needed. In my state (Utah), street legal e-bikes with thumb throttles are limited to 20mph. However, if there's no thumb throttle (PAS only), you can go up to 28mph as long as it has a speedometer. I used the settings on the display to set a 28mph speed limit, and it works quite well.

My ride to work is about 14 miles, and with PAS set to 9 (out of 9; or 5 out of 5) I use about half the battery on a one-way trip. The screen readout shows a consistent power output around 600W when I'm riding at top speed (I pedal pretty leisurely, so I'm not assisting very much), and the ride takes just over half an hour. So the math adds up for using roughly half of the 650Wh battery. I carry my charger with me to work and recharge at my desk in the afternoon, preferring to use 2 50% discharges instead of 1 100% discharge, hoping this will preserve my battery capacity in the long term.

I appreciate the gearsensor accessory. It's a little pricey, but it makes gear shifting a lot smoother. I'm still getting the hang of gearing down when I slow down to stop at traffic lights and such (if you don't, even the gearsensor can't help you a ton when you're trying to start in 9th gear). But it makes shifting up real nice when accelerating.

I did test out the bike without the 28mph speed limit programmed in. It maxed out in the low 30's on level ground. If I didn't have huge, knobbly mountain bike tires (plus maybe a more aerodynamic riding position) it'd definitely be faster and more efficient. But since that chews through battery really fast, I'm okay with the 28mph limit.

Luna Cycle delivered a great product, and I don't have any complaints. But I also did my homework before buying to make sure I wouldn't hit any snags. Total cost for my build was a little over $1500, which I think is pretty good for a full suspension electric mountain bike. Definitely worth it.

I built this to satisfy my downhill trail addiction. 2018 Giant Trance 2 with a hot rodded BBSHD . Built for climbing and downhill speed.

I have some FLX bikes with Bafang Max motors they have Shimano 9 speed rear derailleurs. I added a gear sensor to that setup to pause the motor while shifting and they work great. Next I got a 3 speed geared hub from Luna to give me 27 speeds, this worked great but I wanted to add a gear sensor to the hub shifter as well. I connected the 2nd gear sensor in parallel with the first sensor and now both shifters cut the motor while changing gears. No more having to remember to pause peddling or tapping a brake to back off the motor when shifting!

I'm 7,000 miles into my Luna bafang motors (3,000 miles on 500w, and now 4,000 miles on a bbs02....both from LunaCycle) on a bike I've owned for 25 years. A daily commuter in hilly Seattle, and I'm such a fan of this technology. I haul groceries, kids, music gear. Looking forward to setting up another ride for my bride. And maybe getting a taste of that ludicrous controller someday for a frame I'd love to build out. Folks at LunaCycle are consistently helpful in all of my interactions. Keep up the great work!

battery was here in rural Alberta Canada in two days. easy online purchase. great product. 59 years old and biking 10 miles to work on trails and gravel back roads. excellent range.

I smacked a BBSHD on my 2016 Giant Trance 2. I'm really happy how stealthy it turned out! People look at me in disbelief when they see me on the trails, riding up on steep climbs like no biggie. I came up with a nice way to put the battery in a backpack, so the triangle doesn't give it away. I liked this bike before, a LOT - but ever since the motor, I absolutely LOVE it! I highly recommend it!
