7th build! Using steel Mongoose frames. Perform excellent!

This kit is well thought out!!! Using their site and blog, the build was easy. When I first rode this bike you can't stop the kid like smile on your face, this is a lot of fun to ride. Some of my friends now have purchased their own e-bike after riding mine, they all said the same thing ( I didn't think it had that much power). I couldn't be happier I did my research and found this site when I decided to do a build.

this is a Cannondale Super V my friend was ready to scrap (it did look pretty bad) so I ask for it and decided to bring it back to life, a project for me and my son and Luna cycle was the place to go, picked up the Bafang BBSHD Mid Drive Kit 750W street legal and the 52 volt Luna Wolf Samsung 30q 12h Battery, that put the bike at 54lbs. this thing flies top speed at 35mph. I'm definitely looking to build another one.

I designed and built my recumbent trike about 20 years ago. As I grew older, I was no longer able to power up hills because of knee problems. Then into my life appeared LUNA CYCLES, with its many E-Power choices!

This is my first E-Powered project and I chose to use Luna’s two-speed front hub motor. I machined an adaptor that attached to the disc brake holes (in the hub) and I screwed on a 13 tooth gear to the adaptor. The 13 toothed gear is connected to a jack shaft, through a freewheel. My pedals are connected to the jack shaft through another freewheel. The three sprocket chain ring (normally attached to my pedals) is connected to the right side of the jack shaft. Motor power and my pedals can utilize all three chain rings, seven external gears and three internal gears. Plus, I have the low gear in the hub motor. Because of the freewheel, I and the motor can deliver power to the rear wheel independently of one another, or work together.

The down side to the way that I E-Powered my trike is that I do not have pedal assist because the wheel speed sensor is inside the hub motor. My next project is to figure out a way to relocate the wheel speed sensor to my rear wheel so I will be able to use the power assist function of the contoller.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO DO THAT?

I use two 10 amp hour 52 volt Luna batteries. With two batteries, I have a spare battery. I fabricated a custom box (and rack) to hold the batteries. There is enough room, in the box, to store the chargers, in the event I decide to go touring and need to charge on the road. Because I ride at night, I use a small 12vdc battery to power my two red LED strips (on the antenna) and the headlight. For a back up, I carry a DC to DC converter that I can plug into the unused 52 volt battery to run my lights. I retrofitted disc brakes to the rear and will retrofit disc brakes to the front, which requires making new spindles. With me pedaling, I am getting about 80 to 90 miles on the two battery packs.

I have put 600 miles on the trike and my only complaint is that the throttle is too sensitive. It seems to be either full on or full off. I would like a smoother transition to full throttle.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW FIX THIS PROBLEM?

This was my 2nd conversion done with Luna. There aren't a lot of tandem conversions posted so I thought I'd share this one. Donor bike is a 2005 Cannondale Mountain Tandem that I bought second hand. Conversion was done to optimize for hill climbing since our ambitions are greater than our fitness levels (or age!). Project was done with a BBS02 kit, Panasonic 13.5 aH battery. I went with the traditional route on the drivetrain keeping the timing chain on the left side. Replaced with Captain and Stoker's timing chainrings with 34T. Using Sugino Tandem cranks (LH & RH sides) which fit the square taper of the BBS02. The LH Sugino crank arm is a 110mm BCD while the captain's is a 104mm BCD so had to find 34T chainrings in both 4 bolt and 5 bolt patterns. The Captain also uses an ISIS drive, but I left that intact. Installed the BBS02 on the stoker position with a Luna chainwheel adapter and also a 34T narrow wide on the driving side. Total road weight for the bike is about 300 - 320 pounds. Tested on a 3 mile climb with minimal pedalling at between 15 - 20 degrees. Pleased that we were able to maintain about 15mph with power levels hovering at 600-700 watts sustained during the climb. The installation process was a bit more involved than a single bike conversion, but still easy. I debated making this a 2x instead of a 1x and there is enough room to do this later without messing up the chainline. The BBS02 is a good fit with decent clearance as you can see on the picture of the stoker position. BBSHD would probably have been too wide for my scenario. I liked leaving the timing chain on the left to balance out the lateral forces on the BBS02 axle. Very pleased with the smooth power delivery and optimization of torque. Highly recommend using one of the online calculators to get started in planning your tandem conversion.
Oh - and we ended up opting for the Kinekt Body Float suspension seatpost. You can go a lot faster and harder with the BBS02 mid-drive so consider your stoker!
Parts to consider for a tandem: BBSxx extra long harness cable - consider the extension cable as well, Gearsensor and spare Nylon Gear as well as an extra clutch to have on hand.
Had some issues with battery charge adapter cables and a missing speed sensor in my order. Customer service was excellent and Luna took care of me (thanks Seb & Scott!). It took a few days longer to finish the build and we were ready to get out there to fine tune the build!

After 1 month, I'm really enjoying it. For someone who has never built an e-bike before, it was surprisingly easy.

Luna took the worry out of buying this motor. The bike is fun to ride and it's great for commuting with the help from the bafang motor. It's better than the wheel hub mounted motor which I think will add to the spokes bending. Luna has been around and you can call with questions.

It was a difficult puzzle but fun enough that I learned a lot. I put the controller and battery in the front box. I had to make extensions for the phase wires etc.

This is my second build and fourth bike. The others were all rear hub. This Luna Bafang BBS02B is the best running of all. Great for the hills where I live.
I purchased this bike specifically for this project. It's just a cheap bike. I wish I had spent a bit more on the bike and got one with an internal gear hub (IGH). The geometry of the the Bafang BBS02 is such that limited shifting is preferred and an 8 speed cassette hub is overkill. On this bike I only use the middle three rear cogs out of the 8.
Having a bottom bracket tool, crank pullers, and a tool for the nuts on the BBS02 is mandatory to do the job easily. I purchased the Luna made tool for the mid drive nuts. It is worth it. I expected the cranks to come off easily on a new bike. They did not, and I almost gave up and drove to the city to get help. I had to use cheaters to get enough leverage to break the cranks loose. After that they were easier to install and remove.
Other than that, it was an easy build. I got great customer service with an issue that I had with the brake sensors. The price was great and the shipping prompt. I chose the C965 vertical display because the horizontal displays just take up too much space on the handlebars. I purchased the programming cable to tweak the PAS parameters and power settings but have not yet had the opportunity to use it. I also purchased some Luna premade XT60 power connector pigtail sets and a battery cradle mount for a "Dolphin" pack so I could use my existing 48V-14AH battery on both bikes.

I installed the BBSHD on the Motobecane Sturgis Bullet without any issues. It was very easy, remove cranks, remove bottom bracket, I used one of bottom bracket spacers on the chain side and I have just enough room between the unit and chainstay to slide a piece of paper. I used the Lekkie 42t Bling HD Ring (has to use 2 spacers behind the chainring). I upgraded to the Lekkie Offet Buzz Bar crank arms. The 52v Wolf battery fit perfectly using the included hardware on the downtube water bottle location. Very pleased with the ease of installation and performance.

This was my second bbsxx from Luna and install was fast and easy. The bike is fast too, noticeably more power than the bbs02, especially on the hills. New life for an old bike, and a great value compared to expensive bikes with a fraction of the power. It's ready for everything from urban commuting to trail riding. So much fun!

I’m really happy. Nice and easy to install I figured it wouldn’t be so easy. I had my bottom bracket removed at a local shop. Bike is fast. Range is great. It’s all I talk about now. Glad I went with Luna, I saved the extra cash and don’t care how much cheaper I can get this or that. Cheaper battery ha. That’s the best part. I don’t love how it mounts makes me anniox. I zip tie the hell out of the pack and will add a Kevlar strap. But I think I will love how it mounts, but I’m new to this. I have no reason not to trust Luna’s method. it’s simple and made like a tank. 104 miles.

Me and my buddy Don went up to Mill Creek. what awesome ride, super technical Switchback. Light Bee handled well. What a true test to see what these bikes can do. can’t wait for the next trip.

Got the parts I needed for my fat e-bike setup

Purchased the 750W mid drive motor kit and 48 volt 24 amp hour battery from Luna Cycles. This battery will handle most my local rides. The folks at Luna walked me through the whole process.
