I always try to do my homework, especially these days, with cost's high and integrity low. I trust myself a little more for doing so, my homework on this project was as follows; study what is currently out in the world at present, via youtube, and peoples opinoin's on what they have found, or believe. As well, what do I, personally expect and am capable to apply to, think of yourself, for yourself. If it"s legal and rational, go ahead and apply to things, but with the world the way it is above all be rational. Luna cycle was where I found myself caught in concentration, and study. A mid-drive was not my choice, at first, however it made sense later on as I picked the option apart. I am new to electric motors, but in this type of project, you don"t need a college degree. I am greatly pleased with luna cycle"s product"s, and reasonability. Hopefully this will help this kind of project take better in society, for the benefit of many applications. So companys good , products are good, but will the end fit in place?, take your time. Patience is a virtue. Good luck!.

Tools are a must when installing! You’ll probably need a crank puller & a few other specialty sockets/wrenches to complete. I did!!

Wonderful love my bike in one month I put 1032 km. I think the people at Luna are Maniacs. That’s why the product is so good.
One piece of advise as a new owner of ebike.
Don’t get fixated on power. Today I only use peddle assist 1-2-3 and am very happy. If you plan on road biking the bbshd is powerful.

Very positive experience. Installation of motor was easy. Installing controls on drop handlebar required some fabrication, especially for throttle. Luna's website is great! I am very happy with the build.

Ten years ago I built this (non-electric) bike for my 20+ mile commute -- Salsa La Cruz cyclecross frame/fork, drop handlebars, hand built 650B wheels, 42mm low-resistance Grand Bois tires, Honjo fenders, and a DIY lighting system and 12V automobile horn. Now I am no longer commuting, and I wanted to use it to replace the car for errands, appointments, hauling stuff, and trips about town without suiting up in cycling clothes and shoes, and breaking a sweat on the hilly terrain around here. The Bafang BSHHD was just the thing. I added the Portear rack and purchased a Wike trailer to support hauling groceries and cargo.

My one disappointment is that I read somewhere on Luna's site that the Steel/Aluminum Chainring Adapter and 44T Sprocket was every bit as good as the Eclipse, so I ordered it. I installed it and rode one block -- then removed it. I assumed that the chain line problems would be minimal for a standard frame like this and a 9-speed cog set, but it was unacceptable. Even though I only rode one block (and the chainring looks unused), Luna would not accept it as a return. While I respect Luna's policy to not sell even lightly used items as new, Iam disappointed, and would much rather have purchased the Eclipse.

Luna Giant Roam 2 Review

Short Version

If you are looking for an electric bike that can replace a second car, this is a very good choice. I have had the bike for 3 months with 1,000 miles on the odometer and I can tell you that this bike will go up any hill fully packed with grocery panniers. I have taken the bike to the 35 mph, but more important to me I have taken it up to 14 mph up a 1/4 mile 19% grade (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/1684975). I have days where I ride a 30 mile commute with stuff, meet my son and grab his stuff, to ride another 10, and still have plenty battery. I do this while only charging the battery to 80% of max with Luna's amazing charger. This is my fourth electric bike, and it while it will faster than the other bikes I don't really go that much faster of a top speed. The real difference is that I can go the speeds that I am comfortable with at all times with as much stuff as I want to carry on flat or up hills. Luna makes wonderful looking and performing bikes, but for me they make a bike allows me to get as much exercise as I want, replace my second car, open a car spot in my garage for other things, and save my lots of money that I can use for other things. I am going to give a detailed review below, but if you stop here I give this bike top marks, and I purchased the fully loaded version of all the options.

My previous bikes were:

Brute Kit hub - lead acid battery

Stromer Elite hub - Mountain 20mph limit

Bionx 500 hub - 28 mph limit

One of the main differences for this bike vs my previous ones is the hub. The hub has regen braking, which does nothing for battery life really, but is nice going down long hills. I missed this at first, but I have gotten used to it and the brakes pads are cheap and easy to change. Also, the hub motor is a little easier to handle when starting and stopping all the time with my son. I think the best analogy is the difference between a automatic sports car and a muscle car with a stick. The Luna Roam is like the muscle car with a stick shift. It is going to devour anything in front of it, but it not exactly nimble in the response to your peddling. I like to peddle, and there is no hand brake cutoff to the motor, so if you are hitting the bakes while peddling the motor is going at the same time. I have gotten used to tapping the assist to zero when getting to places when I need to go slow. This makes it easy to change gears, stop easily, and it is hard to keep the bike going slower that 11 mph when the assist at level 1.

To really use the motor to it fullest and happiest, the throttle is the only way to go. It is impossible to peddle as fast as the motor will go with the throttle, and it will easily hit 35. The fastest I have been able to get it to go peddling is 29, but 24 for extended time. You never need to peddle, but one of the reasons I am biking is to get exercise so I peddle.

So, I like this bike more than my others because:

1. I go twice as fast (or more) up hills
2. The battery goes twice as far than the stromer
3. The battery goes 3 times father than the Bionx

The Bionx (out of business) motor has a little more torque, and is a little more responsive.

Reason not to buy a Luna:

If you are new to bikes and don't want to fix anything, or you want a bike right away. Luna is a manufacturer and a very good one, but not really a dealer. If you want to buy a bike, and take it in to have a flat changed, change a cassette because the gears are skipping, or you don't know what skipping gears is I suggest going to an electric bike store/dealership. There is a very good one on in El Segundo on Main Street where I purchased my Stromer from. I put 13,000 miles on that bike, and that shop/stromer always honored the warranty and treated me like a VIP.

Reason to buy a Luna:

You want to go faster, further, and really feel that sense of exhilaration that the car advertisers tell you about.

Modifications

1. This chain oil "Eco Sheep EVERYDAY SHEEP – Sheep Oil Based, Eco-friendly Bike Chain Oil" really helps keeping the chain on the cog teeth with Luna powerful motor

2. I am older and ride a lot, so I put and adjustable head stem on.

3. I switched to Marathon Deluxe, 50-622, Black-Reflex, Folding 28 x 2.00 11600418.02, which fit the bike, but are hard to get that last bit of the tire over the rim.

4. I changed the front brake rotor to 180 with and adapter for the front brake disk. This was very easy, just 8 screws.

5. I am using the bike for commuting/touring purposes, so I have purchased a Chromoly fork, but I have not put it on yet.

I had a great experience purchasing a Bafang BBSHD 1000W motor kit and 52V battery pack from Luna Cycle.
After watching numerous Youtube video's and reading hundreds of reviews, I decided to purchase everything I needed through Luna Cycle. I had additional questions before the purchase and left a voicemail on their answering machine. A day or so later, someone from Luna called me back and I had all of my questions answered and then I made the purchase.
It was very helpful to have the crankset removed from the bottom bracket on my bicycle by my local bike shop. It only cost $20.00 and it saved me from having to buy the tool and any aggravation associated with not doing it correctly if I did something wrong. The motor kit did not come with instructions, but all of the information I needed was available on Youtube. Installing the motor and battery was not that difficult, especially since I purchased the special Luna installation tool.
After the first ride, I was hooked. I use my e-bike to commute to work, five miles one way. Getting to work is now enjoyable, and I have noticed that I am not as stressed out once I get to work like when I drive my car. I have had no regrets after making this purchase...the price seemed a little high at first, but in this case, you get what you pay for, and I cannot put any price on the enjoyment I get from riding my electric bike.

I rode from Seattle to Portland with wife in two days.

Great setup. Enjoyed the build, not to difficult and was able to get my 25 year old Diamondback into service. I will be building one for my wife next so we can ride together. My KTM is taking a backseat to my EBike on our RV. Love it!

Great bike, it just works perfectly and has tons of power. You can burn through the battery in 15 or 20 miles if using the Ludi power allot. I got a second battery for long rides so I don't have to baby it!! I have put 150 miles on it so far and Loving it!

IT HAS TO BE A MID DRIVE KIT- NO HUB DRIVE !

This kit took me about four days to completely install on my Cannondale Catalyst 4. I did not have spacers for the fixing plate bolts nor did my display come with the required spacers to mount to my handlebars.

I picked up this Sears, fat tire “Iron Horse” on Craigs List for $200. Steel frame with 26 inch wheels. The bike needed nothing for the conversion except a Bafang BBSHD kit. Removed the front derailleur and shifter leaving me with 7 gears. Using a half-twist Bafang throttle on the left side, DPC-10 display, 7 speed twist shifter on the right and a 52V 13.5AH Panasonic Dolphin battery. I installed a Luna aluminum 42” chain ring. It is great to ride on single tracks and hits top speed of 30 mph in 7th gear on the street. I've gotten 24 miles plus in PAS level 1 with light peddling. Total cost was under $1200 for the bike, battery, chain ring and motor kit. No other modifications. Was not too difficult to adapt this kit to this bike.

I really like the new charger it lets you see how much amperage the battery is charging at also it is much quieter. Luna products are great, worth the money, and they last. My 2 year old batteries and charger have been running strong with no issues. Highly recommended.

This is my extra large salsa bucksaw. It's one of my best builds yet. It's solid over any surface Rocky or Sandy and rolls fine on the pavement.
